Help - PCS malfunction after installation of lift & tires

Hi,

Curious if anyone has seen this issue and has been able to resolve. I've seen numerous postings on this, more so with Tacoma's and the root cause seemed to be due to the earlier faulty sensors or grill updates. Here's my situation - I installed the Toytech/Bilstein 3" lift with SPC control Arms. No issues with PCS after lift install and test ride. The following day I had new 285/70/17 tires installed on TRD Pro wheels and shop performed an alignment. After installation of tires and alignment the vehicle is displaying the Pre-Collision System Malfunction, warning light and slip indicator lights remain on.

I took the vehicle to the dealer and they initially pointed to the lift/tires and said all they can do is clear the code and turn off Safety Sense features. After a bit of pushing they did investigate further and try to resolve. Work order states they performed memory clear and zero point calibration, hard reset and attempted millimeter wave sensor adjustment but could not clear codes or condition. I feel they made a good attempt accept my responsibility in this by modifying the vehicle (at no charge). The part that's hard to accept is it seems others have performed the same if not more extreme lift/tire updates with no issue so trying to understand what is different in my situation as well as why the system can't be re-calibrated to the new height.

I also hit up Toytec to see if they have seen this issue and were aware of any fixes. Since there where no issues with just the lift I'm hesitant to blame the lift and tend to think it's related to tire size or alignment. It maybe that tire size was that the tipping point to push height outside of the parameters? Toytec suspected height was not the factor and if anything they've seen this when rake is affected, but given that fact that I didn't have this issue with the lift and stock wheels/tires I feel rake is not the culprit.

Appreciate any experience from folks on this site, either solutions or ideas to point me in the right direction. Lastly, I hope this doesn't turn into thread a bashing of Toyota for inclusion of these new high tech features. They are obviously frustrating me at this time but I must say I did enjoy the radar cruise control prior to this issue so just hope to get this resolved and not turn the discussion into a bashing of Toyota, as I know I've modified the vehicle and just trying to fix whatever it is I broke. I have an appointment with another dealer on Friday and will update in the event of resolution.

Here's a pic of the results. Couldn't be happier with the look and ride is well improved with the tighter Toytec/Bilstein kit and no increase in road noise from the Falken tires.

I just has a 3/2 lift on 285s installed at Toyota and zero issues with TSS.

Nomad thank you for the reply. Can i ask if your vehicle is also a 2020? Sounds like your setup is exactly as mine. My dealer is open to any info i find so would be great to confirm no issue with same yr. & setup. thanks

Yep i saw that and found lots of threads on the issue but haven’t seen any where someone has received the error after lifting and resolved. The fixes seem to apply to faulty sensors or grill swaps on Tacoma’s. Thanks

My dealer did a "fix" where-as they disable the collision avoidance as default when the vehicle starts up. This fixes the error, though the light still is on that says it is off. They said it was a fix issued for the Tacoma's when they had this issue.

Thanks for the info. I will update this thread with any solutions. I reached out to Jomax regarding the relocation brackets they make for the Tacoma. He told me this unfortunately doesn’t correct the 4runner and the only fix is to find a dealer willing to recalibrate to the new ride height and angle post lift. Good to know what i’m chasing at least but issue is likely finding a willing and able dealer

just FYI. i put TRD Pro Fox with 3/4 inch Cornfed spacers in the front on my 2020 TRD OffRoad. over all 2inch gain in the front. Also put on TerrGrappler on TRD rims. No issues with LDA or PCS. and BTW i really like how PCS works... it works really well on my 120km daily commute on the highway.

That’s good to hear that you are having no issue with the 2“ lift. I think the combo of taller tires and the 3“ lift was enough to put me out of tolerance. I’m currently working on a mod to lower the sensor. I agree the with you, the radar cruise control is great. Thanks for the info, it seems the only difference is the addt’l inch of height on my lift so tells me i maybe going in the right direction with trying to lower the sensor

PCS/TSS issue Resolved
 
Just wanted to update this posting with the news that I finally found a dealer that was able to restore functionality of TSS and clear Pre-Collision Sensor error, without returning the vehicle to stock. Actually I didn't find the dealer, Toytec did so big thanks to Kevin at Toytec for going the extra mile to provide reach out to their network to find a solution and advise a local dealership.

I don't know exactly what the steps where to resolve but as I understand following the standard calibration method recommended by Toyota does not clear the codes. The 2nd Tech took a bit of unconventional approach and was able to restore functionally. They cannot guarantee the effectiveness of the system (ie. range calibration may not be 100%) but it seems to be working fine and no longer throwing errors.

For others considering to lift a 2020 I'd say I'd do it again but would caution that you could find yourself in the same predicament but after tons of research I've found just 1 other person that ended up with the same issue as me, most seem to have no issue so seems it's a bit of a gamble. Going with a company like Toytec or Pro Comp that has the experience and the support network to help should you have issue is key as dealers really seem to have their hands tied when it comes to mods with the new safety features Toyota is adding.

OP, any chance you can share which dealer and\or contact? I'm currently running into this issue after a 2.5+ lift. Before I found this thread I did take it into a dealership on the way home from a trip as I thought a re-calibration was warranted but that dealership said that the radar sensor was broken. I don't believe its broken because everything actually worked for a about 10 miles today, no warning lights then it has come on again. The dealerships diagnosis was to plug in another radar and that cleared for only the time it was plugged in, they didn't drive around. "They" said that the hidden winch install "probably" broke the radar. I'm not buying that theory.

I might have to take it to a local dealer and if I had a contact I could tell them to contact the person who fixed your issue.

I had the same problem. Installed a 2.5/1.5 lift. Drove it 100 miles, no lights. Too it to a local 4x4 shop for an alignment, malfunction. They said they couldn't fix it. I took it to the dealer, basically saw the yaw sensor needed calibrated. Basically told me the shop must not have been careful because getting an alignment should not have caused it normally.

pre collision sensor malfunction
 
2020 4 runner offroad model
W/ Ironman 4x4 2.5 lift front 2.75 rear installed.
No check engine lights till after alignment.
After alignment at independent shop vehicle had
PCS sensor malfunction and other codes on dash light up.
Cruise control was disabled from working.
Temporarily went into settings and turned pcs off each drive until fixed to stop chime.

Took to dealer. Told issue and mentioned zero point calibration.

Refused to cover Issue by warranty.

They charged diagnostic fee and completed a zero point calibration and down hill assist calibration. They performed a "health check to confirm dtcs cleared."
This solved issue. Only found out about this sensor issue after the lift.

Thanks all .. looks like I'll be heading to the dealership. I don't get any beeps, I only have this light lit up except if I turn on the cruise then set the cruise is when I get the explanation mark triangle.

Why not try the zero point, only takes a paperclip?

This solved issue. Only found out about this sensor issue after the lift.
