1st Major Service 2017 TRD OFF Road 4WD
I have 38,500 on a 2017 TRD Off-Road 4WD. Dealer is telling me i should do the 4wd service now or soon (Front and Rear Diff & Transfer Case Fluid). Toyota doesn't seem to have any thoughts in the service book as to when it should be done. Not really getting a straight answer from the dealer. Trying to gauge when it should be done based on either type of use or something to gauge when it should be done. I do think it is good to do but just when is that? They also are suggesting brake fluid change and a fuel injector service. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Thanks guys!

I change my diff's and t-case at 30000 miles and I wouldn't do a brake flush With that low of miles and I don't ever do a fuel injection service

At 30k miles I'd do:
Engine and Cabin air filter Brake fluid flush (every 2 years) then mayyybe: Front and rear diff fluid (some folks do it every 50k) Transfer case fluid (some folks do it every 50k) Keep up with engine oil changes. Nothing else is needed with 30k miles |
Wouldn't hurt to do the diffs and t-case at 50-60k.
If the brake fluid looks clean, I wouldn't bother. Fuel injector cleaner is snake oil. What sucks is that some dealers will lie that they did the service when they haven't. |
IMHO Diffs and xfer case should be done before 50k. I did mine at ~37k.
Brake fluid aborbs water, which is one reason to change it. I just flushed mine in my 2015, fluid was darker than I expected. |
You should do diffs for sure. The rear one will be totally black and if you could see it, you would be glad you did it. The front maybe not so much but depends on how often you 4WD.
Transfer case is OK to at least 50K. Cabin air filter will be disgusting if you have never done it. |

You don’t need the “fuel injector” service. They claim it cleans the valves, but our engines are port injection. They are always cleaning the valves. One of the many reasons why I love the 4.0 engine.

1st Major Service 2017 TRD OFF Road 4WD
I drained my rear diff every 10k with every engine oil change since new. I’m now a little past 33k.
First rear diff drain at 10K was extremely dirty, dark grey color. I’m glad I did the first service. Second drain at 20k was also dirty, but not as severe as the first drain, more of a light grey. Third drain and fill came out clean, with very minimal grey, but mostly clean fluid, and normal collection of metal shavings on plug. After seeing the fluid condition at the 3rd drain at 30k, I feel comfortable replacing the rear diff fluid every 30k. Also did the front diff and transfer case at 30k, both drained clean, but just did them for peace of mind. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
I did mine at about 45k - the rear diff was surprisingly clean for a factory fill. My front was filthy for some reason. I did the transfer case at the same time as well.
My truck is mostly highway driven, but I'm still glad I changed fluids when I did. It likely could have gone longer, but it's cheap insurance. |
At least do the rear diff fluid. Mine was pretty dark at 30k with sever wheeling trips. The rest you can wait for 50k (no brake fluid or injector needed)
