What shocks are you using?

I want to replace my front shocks on my 2001 SR5 . It’s stock no lift . I have the 5th gen 17 inch rims . I just need help to find the best shocks for daily driving. Any suggestions

It's 100% opinion and personal preference.
Most people agree that the best on-road ride is OEM, but it's not the cheapest.
The majority seem to have Bilsteins 5100's (should say that those majorities are for this forum only).
I opted for the Bil 6112/5160 combo and have no complaints (but I was looking for a Little more height and wanted something that'd handle washboards better).
If you're on a budget, go for the KYB gas-a-just. If you have an unlimited budget then put on some King or Icon coil-overs.

blue and yellow Bilstein 4600's, if keeping stock height. 5100's if lifting a bit. Just about to put a set of 4600's on my 2001 with 5th gen springs all 4 corners

If the stock shocks are blown, anything new is going to be better!
I did NAPA shocks on a completely stock Tacoma and was very pleased at the ride on it. I had a crazy deal at the time with a company discount + sale, and walked out with 4 shocks for 90...

Definitely following this thread. OP you and i have pretty much identical set ups, I also have a 2001 SR5 with 5th gen wheels except they’re still silver for now. My shocks and possibly struts are on their way out. Anyway i can tell the difference without taking it to a shop?

Reading your build thread encouraged me to follow a similar route. Our goals and objectives were very similar from what I could tell. That said, I opted for 5100 w/ Dobinsons C59-137v in the rear instead of 5160s w/ OME 906 for two reasons. First, I have no need for a remote reservoir and second, Bilstein USA informed me that the 5100 is valved identically to the 5160.
Which perch setting did you end up going with on the 6112s up front? How much lift did that get you? If you were doing it over would you keep those perch settings?

If you are never going to lift and want a comfortable ride, you have at least three good choices: OEM, KYB and Bilstein 4600. The Bilsteins will be a *bit* stiffer than OEM/KYB, but are still very comfortable. Avoid the normal parts store shocks - they offer either a crappy ride, poor longevity or both.
Also, you have shocks on all 4 corners - the fronts are often mislabeled as struts though... (they are coilover shocks, not struts)

Charlie said it best the 4600 are a great on the road shock and are a little stiffer which is great for the 3rd gen. They definitely break in very nice and last a long time. Offroad they are not as solid as some others but shine on the road. I run 5100 on my Tundra (lifted), my wife's 5th gen (leveling front), and son's 4th gen and decided that our old 3rd gen would stay stock and have had the 4600 (front and rear) on it for over a year and the ride is very solid.

Good grief, that's my biggest complaint. I have no clue what perch I ended up with because I had to change it 3 times. I was aiming for just Slightly taller than stock on a '99, minimal positive "rake". 3/4 I think, maybe that's where I started.
I honestly got so fed up with changing the heights that I simply quit. Not Exactly where I wanted it but heck if I'm changing it again for the small difference.
I wanted the 2.5" body for the extra oil (takes longer over rough terrain for fade ~ I was a suspension tech in decades gone Way by so sometimes I let my theoretical wants over-rule common sense). Makes complete sense that the Valving is the same as that is 100% reliant upon the spring rate.

Got it thank you!! You can tell I’m new to this, this will be the first time I’ve ever changed any suspension parts on any of my cars besides lowering springs on my Camaro a few years back. I’m wondering what the price difference will be between all three of those options 🤔

-OEM is very expensive in front, cheap in back. Will be the most expensive option to stay all OEM. Check camelback Toyota.
-Billies are middle priced all around. Google search, maybe rock auto.
-Kyb is very reasonable and will be the cheapest. Google search or rock auto.
Anything cheaper than KYB will likely not be worth the trouble.

There are many threads here that outline EXACTLY what you will get, and can expect, from various packages and upgrades.
Research is still the best game in town...
FWIW, shocks alone don't make the ride, it's the combo of shocks and springs.

I have KYB Monomax on my 'runna. I like them, they're a mono tube high pressure shock that pairs very well w/ stock springs.
