There are many really thorough and well made guides for changing the fluids in the 5th gen 4Runners. However, in all of the guides I have ever looked through, it was either missing the fluids that were used, the maintenance intervals, the Toyota parts needed to follow the guide, the tools that fit these Toyota parts or the torque specifications to make sure newbs like me don't royally... mess things up. I'm not a mechanic or even mechanically inclined, so nothing comes easy for me. I imagine there are others out there with my same lack of expertise. Disclaimer: I am not a mechanic or even mechanically inclined. PLEASE, before buying anything I list here, go to Toyota Parts and Accessories - Official Online Store, select your specific 5th gen 4Runner and verify that the part(s) are compatible with your vehicle. Also, I would wait for the veterans of this site to tear me a new one first, as I'm not promising that everything I post here is perfect or will work for your particular vehicle. The information posted here is from a mixture of different resources, including Toyota Parts and Accessories - Official Online Store, a 2016 Factory Service Manual (FSM), youtube.com and many, many websites including this one. *NOTE: To determine whether your 4Runner takes a "Japan" or "Local" sourced part, look at the first character in the VIN number: J = Japan sourced part 1, 4 or 5 = Local sourced part 2016 Toyota 4Runner SR5 Basic Information: Model #: GRN285L-GKAGKA Weights: Curb Weight: 4,675 lbs Weight Limit (Occupants + cargo): 1,165 lbs GCWR (Gross Combination Weight Rating): 4WD: 11,300 lbs; 2WD: 11,100 lbs GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating): 6,300 lbs Front GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating): 3,000 lbs Rear GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating): 3,450 lbs TWR (Trailer Weight Rating): 5,000 lbs Unbraked TWR (Unbraked Trailer Weight Rating): 1,655 lbs Tongue Weight: (Gross trailer weight x .09) ...to... Great info, thanks

Awesome post. Thanks!
Only thing I might suggest changing is the lug nut socket size to 21mm since everything is metric on our 4Runners. |

Sorry, I've only had this 4Runner since November 2019 and just a couple of months ago was my first oil change! lol thanks for bearing with me. |

I'm just being nit-picky. Your post is a great resource. |
Great reference, thanks!
This should be a sticky. |
so, i overlooked the transmission's Check/Overflow Plug Gasket. it's now included!
:bounce: |
Lug nuts are generally sized to allow for SAE or Metric tools.
17, 19, 21, & 23 MM or 11/16, 3/4, 13/16, 7/8. Many lug nut wrenches, and sockets will display both SAE and metric size right on the tool. Like this deep socket. https://www.toyota-4runner.org/attac...5933-jpg?stc=1 Or this 4-way on Amazon. Amazon.com: EPAuto 14" Heavy Duty Universal Lug Wrench, 4-Way Cross Wrench: Automotive |

Any chance you could add any potentially broken suspension part numbers for the front end? CVs, Tie Rod, End links, etc? I think it would be helpful to give an idea of spares to carry or have in the garage. Thanks |
As a new 4runner owner, this helps out a lot. Thanks for the post!

Maybe in the future when I have more experience and start messing with upgrading my 4Runner and spending more time researching, I might be up to making a more advanced and thorough guide, maybe. I really made this guide for people, well, like me. Someone who isn't super savvy with car repairs and maintenance but would like to have their 4Runner last as long as possible without breaking the bank. Sorry. :noidea: |
Super helpful post! Mind me asking if you can add in recommended change intervals. Thanks!

Personally, I would really only sweat two, motor and transmission oil, and my oil changing guide covers the intervals for the motor oil. I think I will include this in here, I just am nervous about giving bad advise. There's a lot of heated discussion when to change fluids and even what fluids to use. As far as the transmission goes, personally, I would do my first flush between 40,000-50,000. If it gets past 100,000 miles, I would do a LOT of research before just doing a complete trans flush (I linked a youtube video below that goes over just that). I'm approaching 40,000 miles myself and I think I'm going to do my own very soon. Then again, I'm sure some veteran of this site will yell at me for giving bad advise, and in all fairness........ I just might be...... I'm also very busy finishing up the 2016-2019 repair manual that I'll be posting here very soon! |
Cool! Thank you!
