Rust issue?

Hello all!

Not a 4Runner owner (yet). I found a 2000 SR5 with 5 speed that I looked at today and found some rust that the pictures didn't show. Frame looks good enough, but some real rust around the rear axle that I am wondering if I should even bother with. Didn't snap any pics but here are some others. Let me know your thoughts.

Here is a pic of the 4Runner. I think they may be asking too much for the rust I saw. I'll see if they can send me the pic that I should have taken today. Miles are 242,xxx.

It doesn't look bad. I'd coat where the frame paint has chipped off to reveal the primer though.

You obviously don't know what rust is! Thats about as clean as you could hope to find unless spent whole life in AZ/NV/CA.

FWIW, I have about the same amount of rust on a 2010 that has spent most of its life in Illinois

Here in the rust belt, that would be a 2 year old truck.

Thanks for this post. I'm in California, and some of the 4Runners I've looked at have lived at or near the coast their whole life. I wasn't sure if this amount of rust is concerning or not. Thanks again!

hit it with an angle grinder and spray over it

rainesrunner 01-16-2022 04:56 PM

not too bad..

The guys here have good advice.. if you feel the price is good then you should be ok.. hit it with the angle grinder and then some inox mx3.
Here's a good video on how to maintain you truck after you've cleaned it up

I bought a 01 4runner and would've killed for it to look like that. I think that truck is fine for the rust

I’m not sure what you are considering rust. So far the pictures you have posted all look like just surface rust. Nothing looks like the metal is thining or soft
