JBL sub enclosure
 

Was wondering if anyone has installed the JBL stock sub enclosure into a non-JBL 4runner.

1.) Does that enclosure have a mounting spot for an amp?

2.) If so how easy/snug of a fit is it.

3.)what size sub does it hold?

Lots of people have, here are some answers from someone that has a JBL stock system.

1. Yes, there is a flat portion on the left side of the enclosure that holds the normal stock JBL amp. You could easily run a micro-amp in that space for just a sub.

2. It fits nicely into the 4Runner since it was made for it, you will want to source the plastic panel in front of it that has a speaker grille as well, otherwise your options are to remove that panel and it will look kinda unfinished, or install your own speaker grille.

3. You'll want an 8" shallow mount sub. Depending on the sub, you may have to trim some of the inside of the box, but that can easily be done with some tin snips/dremel.

I have pics of my sub swap (in factory housing) in my build thread in my signature, a quick search will turn up lots of similar threads of people swapping theirs.

Hey man another option is using a wood spacer and trimming the ribs inside the box. I did this and fit an alpine type r 8" in there after the aftermarket pioneer shallow mount sub blew. Much better sound quality with the alpine and worth the effort

This video will show you a lot. Some trimming may be required to make the amp fit. 8-inch sub. Plenty of options out there.

i've just got the base sr5 with the stock stereo and i'd love to have a sub somewhere. it's one of the few things i've had trouble searching for - usually my search results come up for other gens.

has anybody successfully installed one of those compact powered subs under a front seat? or maybe installed a sub and amp into the rear panel on a vehicle that didn't come with a factory sub?

The video I linked in the post above shows how to install a sub in the factory location in a vehicle not equipped with one.

If you’re picky about it, the stock subwoofer box has an internal volume of 0.415 cubic feet.

The stock amp is pretty small in terms of physical size, so do your homework about amplifier dimensions. Also keep in mind that a little bit of power goes a long way. 300 watts will probably get you where you want to be.

As far as one of the compact sub/amp combos, there’s actually some room behind the rear panel you can work with.

Here’s some pics of my amplifier setup. I didn’t have a stock sub. I had to cut that plastic tray off the back of that panel. I have 2 Rockford 4-channel amps (fully active front and rear) with a DSR1 digital signal processor. I fabricated brackets and mounting for everything.

If you look to the right of my amplifier mounting plate, there’s all this empty space. I was considering adding one of those amp/sub all in one combos, so I did the measurements. Most of them on the market are 9”x14”x3” and if you’re willing to make a custom bracket, it can definitely fit. I didn’t go this route because I wanted to fit both of my 4 channel amps and it was a LOT easier to spread out the 4 channel amps. I ended up without enough room for the sub.

I hope you get this message man, it’s been a few years since you posted this. You had to use a wood spacer to get the Alpine Type R to fit? I’m looking at putting a Gen 2 Type R in there.

So you are certain on the JBL sub enclosure is .415 cubic ft? Had a guy on Reddit say it was closer to 1 cubic ft. Mentioned that he filled it with water and weighed or something. Lol! Not even joking. Where did you get that .415 from? Spec sheet?

Chances of a reply are pretty low as neither of these members has been active for awhile.
