Lets Talk Dash Cams

Had an unfortunate event happen this past Sunday where the 4Runner was broken into. While on a hike with the misses, the(y) smashed the driver side window in and rummaged through the glove box and center console. I never leave items in open view, as not to attract unwanted attention. But they were determined to find something, I guess. They scored a tire pressure gauge/deflater and my prescription glasses, both of which were inside the center console. :tsk:

I've been wondering if a front and/or rear dash cam would have at least allowed me to get a face shot of the scumbag, or perhaps a vehicle description or plate ID. I'll never know. But I am considering installing front and rear cams. Not to mention there are a lot of idiots and bad drivers on the California roads.

What are you all using, or recommend?

I have a Blackvue DR900S dash cam in my Runner. It's been good so far but I haven't completed the full install (rear camera and hard wiring).

I haven't bought one yet, but i been eyeing the Blackvue products. I hear nothing but great things about them. Still undecided on which model though.
  • Is Cloud service worth it?
  • Will the DR590-2CH suffice?
  • DR900 4K overkill?
  • Is it easy to disable sound? How are passenger reactions when they see your front camera? Do they question the recording of conversations?

Sorry to thread jack, I want to avoid thieves and unwanted guests as well!

I have the Blackvue DR900-S 2 channel front and rear, hardwired with the backup battery and I freaking love it. Having the battery to run in parking mode was essential for me, so I highly recommend it.

Dash Cam

Dash Cam Recommendation

Dashboard cam?

OEM Toyota dash cam

That sucks and I can relate. I had my previous 4runner broken into in a similar way. The broke the rear passenger window and hauled my back pack out through the window.

-> Late model Toyotas don't have a glass breakage sensor. Why?

I also have a dash cam - Roav C2, just because people are stupid. It's super easy to install and use. However, it doesn't have an interior view, but you could face it inwards.

The problem with just about any aftermarket camera is they just might steal that too.

I have dual channel blackvue 590w models in my T4R and wife’s highlander. They’re solid even though they’re older. I think 4K is overkill, but when I upgrade I’ll get it. The 1080 is excellent as is. I have endurance SD cards in both and I’ve not had a problem at all. Power magic pro I ran for a while was a POS, but I hear they’re hit or miss. Wish I had a better suggestion for parking mode.

Of course Blackvue is great, but it's pricey. Check out the Rexing line on Amazon, particularly the V1. I've been running two for about a year and they are very good.

I have this one and I like it. It is hardwired in and has a shock sensor so theoretically it would record if someone broke my window but they would probably steal the camera.

Thinkware u1000 with all the extras except backup battery. 4k front, 2k rear. Customer service is amazing as well.

A driver ran a yield in front me, literally the 2nd week I had it. Saved me a lot of headache for insurance purposes.

Console vault, or comparable brand, may be a good investment as well.

Yep, that's the one I have.

I have a blackvue. I often wonder if that will be the reason my car gets broken into.

I have a garmin 55. I had a papago before that.
I also have the parking mode cable, so it records whenever it senses movement. What I have learned from that is that people try my doors all the time, and people bump my vehicle a whole lot more than I ever imagined.

I had problems with the garmin 55 overheating (in september, in Canada) and I had a warranty exchange with it. the new one hasn't crapped out yet, but it does overheat and shut down from time to time.

Next one I buy will have a capacitor instead of a battery. I do like the incredibly small size of the garmin 55, and the voice controls. The tiny mount is very good too.

I like the BlackVue.
Option to run in parking mode (easy on/off switch). Picks up great sound and saves videos to the cloud. I like not having to fear running out of storage space either, works like an old voice recorder that just saves over old data. You do have an option to save clips that will not be recorded over.
My rear camera picks up great video even though it is behind window tint. Both front and rear provide a wide camera angle. I have been contemplating an interior camera for that very reason. There are some dual ones on the market that have an exterior and interior camera in one unit.
