What's Up With My Wheel/Brake Size?

My 2004 4Runner SR5 has 17" wheels with 265/65-R17 tires. But I also have the WG brake calipers that RockAuto shows are for 16" wheels.

I replaced my original calipers last year that were stamped WG with the NAPA equivalent and a set of 319mm calipers because that's what RockAuto shows for WG calipers. I didn't check my wheel size because I assumed I had the 16" wheels and all the parts I bought matched up in size and appearance with the parts that were on my 4Runner.

I probably should have noticed this years ago, but I haven't had to put tires on it yet and I looked at the tires yesterday and realized they were 17s.

So now I'm wondering if the previous owner put the bigger wheels on it. I can't imagine it came from the factory this way. And if the calipers ever freeze up again, can I upgrade to the WL or WH calipers and get bigger rotors? I feel like I missed an opportunity to get bigger brakes haha. Has anyone else run into this before or after buying their 4Runner?

I believe all the 4th gens came with either 17" wheels or 18" on the 06+ limiteds. My sr5 with the smaller brakes has these ugly 5 spoke 17" wheels. The smaller brakes will work with some 16" wheels, so maybe this is where the confusion is? What wheels do you have?

Rotor size question

Rotor size "16 or 17?"

Thanks Bossman! Based on the info in these links I can use the WH caliper and larger rotor, but I would need to trim my dust shield or it would interfere with the bigger rotor. I guess it's not that uncommon to have the larger 17" wheels with the small brakes.

Mine has the 17" 5 spoke wheels in your picture. When I look up tires for my model year they don't even have an option for 18, only 16 or 17 is available.

I don't normally have strong feelings about wheels, so I'm fine with these. I have seen some on newer Tacomas that I like more, but at this point I'm not investing money in new wheels.

My '03 V8 LTD, That I bought used has the wheels pictured and when I went to do the brakes I was surprised it had the "smaller" rotors too, as all I read said they should be the larger. Anyway, I upsized with StopTech rotors and NAPA calipers and all is well.
The brake shields needed to be bent back a little ( what's left of them!!).
