Is it possible to upgrade a 2016 SR5 Navigation to the 2020 Navigation Stock Unit?

Hi,

I’m researching on buying either a used 4runner or a new one. The 2020 Navigation unit looks to be a lot better with a larger screen and Apple CarPlay.

Is it possible to upgrade a 2016 4Runner (thinking SR5 Premium) to the 2020 stock navigation unit? Oh, and I’ve had aftermarket stereos put in my cars before but have found a lot of things can go wrong so that’s why I’m asking about the stock 2020 Nav unit.

Thanks!

I do not think it has been tried yet, likely due to cost - I am interested Aswell though if someone has.

I would be interested in this if it is a straight swap. apple carplay was convenient

It will not work. Totally different wiring harnesses and plugs in the back.

can always solder wires together , just need to match the correct ones

OEM headunits are consistently problematic. I'd just go aftermarket becuse it is easily reversible and you get a better quality product.

OK sport. How do you propose to do that? What '19/'20 diagrams are you referencing? Please post links.

It would def cost way too much. But if it could be swapped then it would be nice to be able to also use the controls on the steering wheel.

Easier said than done. There was a YT video that was posted which said with the amount of time and effort to re-pin all the wires in the harness it’s not worth it. Especially if you bought a 2020 head unit for a few thousand dollars which is not returnable if you bought from a authorized Toyota parts dealer. If you screw up, you have a 2020 brick. Also if you were to pay a shop to re-pin, the labor costs would be in the thousands. And after all that work, who says it would be compatible and if everything would sync and work correctly? I bet a shop would not guarantee their work on a project like that.

Not worth it if you ask me.

Lol it’d be cheaper to pay a haxxor to root entune and add Android auto/CarPlay. Quite honestly considering how shitty entune is and how long it has been around now I am surprised no-one has tried it yet.
