Sliders that ding OTHER people’s doors
 

So my head spinning from looking at all the different slider threads on the different forums. However this is the wife’s rig. Her primary concern is door dings as she says most offerings will be fine off road. True story.

On my former FJ I had sliders that actually damaged one inconsiderate *****’z door to the point they couldn’t close it. Or better stated, she damaged her door on my slider. Good times. Looking for something similar for her rig. However that is not a consideration that seems to be spoke about.

Looking at Shrockworks (they are local), RSG and RCI.

Does anybody have any feedback on “office parking lot” protection as far as sliders go?

lol, i'm sure any slider will do. sliders that have a 0 degree bend will poke out slightly more than one with a bend so just consider that when choosing between brands.

If there is much of a curve to a door it will hit above a slider and a rear door on a sedan is even worse for hitting up high.

Get the sliders you need for off road and as a step and get her to park and walk, not squeeze in to a tight space. This may be difficult to get her to do but IMO it's the only option.

I believe in "park and walk". We have occasional squabbles about this, especially on a rainy day where she wants to park closer.

Seems the various manufacturers vary wildly in their width (come from old school aerospace manufacturing late 80s early 90s so +- 0.002 was the yard stick :p ). The Shrockworks, for example, would be pretty sweet as far as local, don’t have to pay shipping costs, etc. However they do not appear to protrude very far if at all from the outer most contact point of the door skin. The RSG Flat on the other hand seem to stick out pretty far but with top plates, looking at about another $300 BEFORE shipping.

Guess I’m getting too old and get lost in the minutia these days.

She’s better at park n walk than I (knee replacements in 9 days) but the parking is secured assigned parking and she has to lead by example at her work... you know, following the rules and all that crap.

I'd get these:

4Runner hybrid sliders with bump out — GREENLANE OFF-ROAD

1) They aluminum, so half the weight on the vehicle and no rust or maintenance required. If they are just for door protection, no need for steel.

2) They are incredibly well made / great craftsmanship.

3) His customer service is exceptional.

4) They are angled up and provide good door ding protection.

5) You can get them for any model.

I've got a set of RSG angled sliders with plate and rear kick out. My 4runner also is lifted 3". This set up is perfect for your concern. The sliders stick out a couple inches from the doors (min at the front) and so the only vehicle which could actually give me a door ding now would be a truck lifted higher than mine.

I have the budbuilt step sliders on my '12 and ultimate sliders on my '19 with the bump out. both are lifted about 2.5" and serve the purpose you are requesting. I part the '19 at the airport a lot and can where others have hit their doors on the slider even if their main purpose if for off road where they have worked extremely well and i would never do without.

even on my '12 with the flat step sliders they also provide protection from other people in parking lots even if not their primary purpose.

Actually, door dings is the primary reason I added sliders to my '10 TE and will to the '20 soon. I've also added them to both Rubicons because of flat sides. aluminum doors, weekly parking in airport garages, etc. I remember with my '12 Rubicon that had Smittybilt sliders on it, an older woman let her Lexus door fly when she opened it and it rung like a bell when it hit the slider. I had just gotten into the Jeep and got back out to look at it. My slider had a small ding, and her door edge had about 1/3 of a golfball shaped U in the edge. She looked at me angrily and said "Those things shouldn't be allowed". I told her, "You should be more considerate in how you treat cars parked next to you. But don't worry, I can touch it up when I get home so you won't have to pay for it." :bounce:



Anyway, C4 Fab is my favorite on the 4R.

I love my Shrockworks angled up sliders. They sit in close and come up higher due to the angularity. I like that they don’t stand out much. I’m 6’3”, so I don’t use them. My wife is 5’2 and can manipulate using them even with high heels. So can my 6 year old boy. There power coating and quality is great. I did not want a kick out either. I wanted the least noticeable slider out there.

Thanks guys for all the personal experiences. Gives me a little bit more direction. Looking real hard at the RSG flat with top plates.

Sliders don't protect from door dings except in some limited situations, and that's really not their intended use, anyway. You're still vulnerable to rear door attacks and trucks and higher SUVs.

If you're worried, park further away.

Any back door will still ding your door. The shape of the rear doors to go around the rear wheel arch will miss the sliders and the top part will hit doors.

I do have RSG angled sliders with kickout and they stick out past the edge of the doors, so it will protect from door dings from most vehicles front doors opening. I also just park in the back regardless.

I put on Tyger steps exactly for this purpose. They stick out farther than anything else I saw and block almost all potential door dings. They're like masks during COVID. Nowhere near 100% effective but they reduce likelihood. Half the vehicles on the road are low enough for sliders to block, and 80-90% of vehicles only have one occupant. But yes, parking further away is also a strategy with similar limited success. For example, my old Rubicon at the end of a lot.
