Another Fuel Gauge Issue

So my fuel gauge on my cluster quit working about a year ago. I dropped the tank and changed the sender. No joy. Finally bit the bullet and bought a refurbished cluster with the correct mileage and swapped it out. Works great. I plugged my utility trailer into my harness on the truck and the fuel gauge quit working again.
When it quit originally I had my travel trailer plugged into my truck.

Both trailers have been towed by other vehicles with no issues, and all the lights on the trailers work correctly.

I am stumped on this one. Any ideas?

Try replacing the ground to the sending unit. That did the trick for mine. At least that’s what I traced mine to based on research and testing.

My 99 did similar. Was fine towing for years, then one day was towing a friends boat with short trailer cable and turned sharp enough to unplug the ground side of the connector.
Some smoke came out from under the dash and my fuel gauge read about 1/2 tank all the time.

I figured out I had torched a ground link somewhere under the dash.

To fix it I just installed a new body to frame ground strap near the fuel tank and rear wheel well. It resolved the issue.

I never did figure out exactly what component had let the smoke out despite looking several times.
