Leveling kit, safety and tire size and rubbing on 4runner 2021
 

First of all,

I am new to the forum. Former JK owner who sold it to order the Bronco. I was on 1st day reservation list and ready to order till I saw the manual transmission is being made in China.

Having said that, my wife said to get a 4 door. Quite honestly, not much into 4 doors but realize practicality. Went to look at the 4dr jeeps and just could not handle the shoe box on wheels look. Not so bad on a 2 door. Plus a few other things were putting me off including trim.

Always loved Toyotas but never owned one because I tend to purchase domestic if I can. Having said that, my 4 door options that are capable vehicle were pretty limited. And I must say, I do love the look of the 4runner. So this weekend, i became the proud owner of a 2021 TRD Off Road premium which I love so far. The thing is awesome. I read people complaining about the plastic look inside being dated and cheap looking. All I can say is, have a look at a Jeep and then tell me what looks cheap :)

Now to the subject of my post.

Been reading a lot about the wheel upgrades and tire size rubbing issues. I really wanted to go with 285's or worse case scenario 275's. with some nice Nitto or KM2 tires. Picked up the TRD Pro wheels today and am heading after work for the tire swap for 265's :sobbing:

Please help me out here before end of day PST. The reason for the stock size is as follows. Apparently Toyota has informed all dealers not to install leveling kits on vehicles with the safety send collision warning system. My vehicle falls into that category. According to the service guy and a few others I spoke with, raising the height of the vehicle screws with the calibration of the radar system and could render the safety sensors useless or inaccurate. If any of you have heard of this please chime in.

I could do the 275's but I heard they still rub without the leveling kit even after pushing the liner in some.

Any thoughts?

I thought that dealers were instructed to disable all that if installing a lift?

Yea. Quite possibly. But that's a high price to pay for safety :( if someone like me just off roads in the summers.

I have Eibach springs on my Pro and I don't think it has affected my safety systems, but then again I turned them all off because they were annoying.

Maybe put all this on hold and do quite a bit of research. What’s the rush, drive it for a while and come up with a solid plan versus jumping into some rushed decision tonight or tomorrow.

I have a 2020 ORP non KDSS- Lift specs in my signature. I turned off lane departure warning first week. I still occasionally get a brake warning at appropriate times. Radar for cruise works perfectly as does auto dimming brights.
My thoughts for you.
The TRD Pro comes from factory 1” higher in front with slightly cut bumper to prevent rubbing. The TRD Pro also has perfect functioning Safety Sense. Consider Bilstein or Eibach shocks all around with fronts on the first perch for+ .85” lift. Should give you that TRD stance. With trimming should be good for 275’s and I’ve read of others running 285’s with that setup. Take your time and enjoy the process.

I did look at the TRD pro and it has stock 265. no where near what a 285 looks like but not too shabby. I just put on the 265 instead and will look into leveling the front if I cant live with the look.

I am not too concerned with lane departure but I definitely want to keep the collision avoidance aspect of the system.

I’m not sure where the sensor is located on the grill of the OR but I know that if you do 2 inches in the front you could swap the grille for an aftermarket pro grille which will lower the sensor right around 2 inches.... if your sensor is behind the emblem then it will be in at the exact height it was from the factory

I just bought a 2021 4 runner and I want to level the front to match the back what size level do I need on the front 2in??

I believe it’s one inch. The Bilstein 5100 set up I’m looking at will level it with one click on the front shocks and it’s about 7/8ths of an inch. I think.

I can't imagine a <2in lift affecting it all that much. I'm sure the operating tolerance of the system can handle a mild lift as long as the rake is maintained. If it can detect vehicles of all shapes and sizes, I wouldn't imagine lifting a bit will compromise that. However I wouldn't just level the front, I'd consider a 1:1 lift.

Bilstein shocks and rear springs or rear spacers ought to do the trick.

Do you mind posting a full shot of your 4runner? Mine is also a silver TRDORP and am looking to go with the black Pro wheels for my 265 KO2s. Just want to see if it's worth it and tough to find "stock" pics

I have a 2 in supreme level kit that at spacers I’m just trying to make sure the front doesn’t look taller than the back ...I chose spacers because it’s basically for looks not too much off roading for me
