Mounting a simple removable shallow rear cargo box ?
Good Morning everyone,
I am tired of the clinking and clanking when I turn corners and finally have the last woodworking project nearly complete. I would like to add a box to the runner to hold all that noisy stuff. The box will be short enough to go under the upper cargo deck and be removable. My question is what is the best method of securing this thing if I want it removable. Anyone else built such a thing ?? Thanks |
Pull back the carpet or mat and there are tie down points. Most guys with drawer systems use these to attach the drawers to the floor.

Yup, there are tie downs back there (near the liftgate on the sides, and up front near the seats) that you can use to strap down stuff.
I ended up pulling out the double-deck system entirely to put in a new 'floor' with a pull out table and a drawer system that is strapped in with turnbuckles to these mount points. While I set this up so I can take the drawers in and out, I nearly never do, it's just too convenient having them back there since this is our main adventure vehicle. Heck, even the fridge gets used for grocery trip runs. https://jcaino.com/Toyota/4Runner/re...116_164725.jpg You can see where the mount locations are here, I reused the tie downs and just got longer bolts. https://jcaino.com/Toyota/4Runner/re...214_180842.jpg https://jcaino.com/Toyota/4Runner/dr...221_124453.jpg https://jcaino.com/Toyota/4Runner/br..._123443314.jpg |
So I am trying to put this under the cargo deck, are you saying the carpet has to come up and there are tie downs underneath ?? Remove the carpet like your trying to replace the subwoofer, plastic side pieces and all ?
Thanks for the replies so far. |

Thank you very much for helping that answers the question.

Are you referring to the flip up cargo shelf thingy? I have been thinking of making some kind of drawers that integrate with that but i think you made the right move just removing it. Any idea of the net weight gaun with these drawers? Those look awesome, love the slide out tables. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

When made from 1/2" Baltic birch for the Drawers and Carcass with one section of 3/4 for the middle divider. 1/3rd of the weight is the lockin/lock out slides. Ways to shed weight on my setup while still using woodworking techniques:

Yup, the double-decker cargo shelf. Took it out. It's right around 1.5" of space, which worked out well to do the 3/4" platform, and then the pull-out table is 1/2" with some ptfe tape on the sides and under the platform to make it slide in and out nicely... Thanks! The slide-out table was a 'light-bulb' moment when I was thinking about what to do back there and so glad I did that....we use it just about every trip out, even if its just a day trip. |
