Which winch? 10k vs 12k

Hi all,

I just received my C4 LoPro bumper so I'm shopping for a winch now.
I'm almost surely going with Warn EVO-S, it seems like a great option and fits the bumper well.

The EVO-S comes in 2 load rating, 10k and 12k lbs. I'm oriented to go with 10k but given the small price difference I might just "upgrade" to the 12k.

Do you see any reason why I should stick with the 10k instead? The weight seems the same, I believe the 12k pulls more thanks to different gearing.

Thanks!

If it were me I’d opt for the larger cap winch. More pulling power and less wear and tear on a larger unit IMO. I put a 16.5k on the Silverado and a 18k on the f450. Just make sure it’s not overly heavy for the vehicle your planning on permanently mounting in on...

trade that KLR 650 in for a DR650 and you will have a proper fleet of vehicles.:fencing:

You might want to check dimensions and compatibility with how large a winch your bumper can handle. Some bumpers, especially the lo-pro slim ones can't hold a 12k winch due to size. You'll likely need to move a coolant line and perhaps move the control box somewhere else.

I went with a Warn VR10S. Figure double the weight of the vehicle.
8k would've probably been just fine.

I read they get slower the heavier you go. Cant say if that is true as this is my 1st.

Looked at the DR and almost pulled the trigger but got a super deal on the KLR I couldn’t pass up...

According to Warn's website, the dimensions of both are the exact same.

There are the only differences I could find:

GEAR REDUCTION RATIO
218:1 vs 234:1

MAX AMP DRAW/ LINE PULL
358 Amps / 10,000 pounds vs 396 Amps / 12,000 pounds

MAX LINE PULL/ LINE SPEED
10,000 pound/5.2 feet per minute vs 12,000 pounds / 4.0 feet per minute

A lot of the 10k 12k winches use the same motor just different gear ratio. To get more torque you have to trade speed.
