Help Solve Electrical Gremlin in '98 T4R

My '98 T4R 3.4V6, Auto 4WD developed an electrical problem, requiring that I remove the Tail Relay in order to drive it (during daylight hours only!).
With the Tail Relay in, weird intermittent things happen, not only do the parking lights stay on when turned off, but sometimes the starter motor stays running after the engine has started and when engine is turned off, the starter keeps cranking the engine until the battery is disconnected. Also, with the Tail Relay in, one time the engine started and the starter motor kept running until I turned the light switch on, and the starter motor immediately cut out, and when I turned the lights back off, the engine shut off immediately, even thought the ignition switch remained on. I substituted another Toyota relay into the Tail Relay circuit, same things happen. Has this happened to anyone here? It still runs great except for the electrical problem, without the Tail Relay plugged in, it runs normally, head lights, brake lights and turn signals work, but plug that Tail Relay back in and it does some strange things! I've taken it from 75k to over 250k and this is the first problem I've had with it. Does this sound like a grounding problem or maybe a bad light switch or ignition switch? Any comments are appreciated!

I don't have an answer but here is my advice because you say "any" is welcome lol.

I'm a licensed electrical contractor and my company specializes in commercial energy efficiency projects...im NOT a master electrician....that being said, we encounter lots of electrical gremlins when retrofitting old buildings and upgrading theatrical lighting systems.....

as you stated replacing the ground is a good place to start. Then its simply a process of elimination. you probably already know this, but you need someone to push you into diving in and committing. Take one switch or item out of the equation, and check to see if there is an impact. If that does not work, put it back and try another. So many times my guys have said that the problem was not X, and when I make them test it, that turns out to be the problem.

anyways, that is my .02

Thanks for your reply, I do need motivation to work on it..I bought a new Rav4 XLE after it acted up, but I can't let go of the 4Runner!
