Looking forward to seeing what people come up with. I’m either going to the regular factory roof rails or an aftermarket rack on my ‘21 Pro unless we get a setup that convinces us otherwise.

I think it depends what you're after. RTT or using your roof as a photography platform - probably aftermarket is your best option. Otherwise Gzila and bajaracks make mounting solutions for the FJ and Pro style racks. You can use those as inspiration and build your own mounts with quickfists and some bar stock aluminum.

I just added more OEM cross bars so there is more support. The OEM cross bars are fairly inexpensive.

Honestly, a good cargo box is way more useful than most full length roof racks I see. Maybe no Instagram Cred, but functionality for the win..

4Runner G5 TRD PRO OEM Basket Rack (fits factory rack) (2019-2021) – Bajarack Adventure Equipment

This is the Baja Rack that fits inside the factory TRD Pro rack. Likely the direction I'll end up going eventually along with the ladder.

This is right up my alley. If you can talk me through what crossbars you used, what size of Thule Cargo Carrier that is (a brief search shows Thule Vector), and anything that can help duplicate this setup, I would appreciate your time.

Carry four Scepter cans?

Sp00ner 05-05-2021 12:18 AM

Currently I just use it for my Maxtrax with the BajaRack mounts, will probably pick up their awning mounts as well for a small awning, and ideally I'd like to get a cargo box for road trips, but it's been a pain in the ass thus far to find the right setup before ordering, though it hasn't really been a priority yet either.

I don't really have a use for tons of stuff up there, and it's probably the worst spot to put things if they'll fit anywhere else. It's fine for recovery boards, awnings, shovels, etc., but if you need a RTT or something you're looking at a replacement with something more 'standard'.

The BajaRack drop in is neat, and I've almost bought it like 4 times, but at the end of the day I feel like I'm about to spend $700 to make my rack slightly smaller and give it a more flexible crossbar system that's still limited by the basket shape.

I throw on my Maxtrax Xtreme boards and Diode Dynamics 42 inch light bar on when expecting to go where I may need them.
Smaller mounts by the base of the rack is for scene lighting which I run a pair of Selective Yellow Diode Dynamic SS3 Pro's with a clear flood lens for scene lighting.
GZila 1.75 tube mounts and KC Hilites mount for the light bar.

What rack mounts did you use for the Scepters?

No mounts. I used four Rhino USA soft loops and two ratchet straps to secure them. Also snugged up one of the factory load bars on the top rung of the rack against one side of the cans. I effectively created a small tight basket for the cans and then strapped them in.

Worked great in that config, did over 200 miles in mixed offroad terrain and about the same number of freeway miles back and forth to the trail from home. On another trip where I only needed 10 gallons, I did similar but laid two cans flat on their sides in the same space.

No issues at all, just have to loosen and tighten the straps as needed to allow for swelling of full cans or shrinkage of empties.

I made a kit to remove the top rail.

Lower profile (I think looks better) and now things can mount further back like Recovery Boards, Cargo Boxes, ect.
