Additional battery time needed AGM G34
Been thinking of doing a dual battery system but it seems all i really need is a deep cycle AGM since it will primarily be providing power for my 20W / 1.45A BaJa LED's for setting up camp and maybe some amplified music from my 600 watt amp (low volume/not at same time) for a few hours.
Figured i would put down where i am so far and revisit when i am ready (also get some input). So far: AGM Group 34 in ether an X2Power X2Power Premium AGM BCI Group 34 Car and Truck Battery - SLI34AGMDP at Batteries Plus Bulbs Or Odyssey battery (not sure model Odyssey). And to provide enough voltage to charge the AGM i will need a Voltage Booster like this: HKB Electronics Or i could go with a battery tender Amazon.com: NOCO GENIUS5, 5-Amp Fully-Automatic Smart Charger, 6V and 12V Battery Charger, Battery Maintainer, Trickle Charger, and Battery Desulfator with Temperature Compensation: Automotive I really prefer to do things the safest and best way so not to mess with my 4R since it seems its sensitive to changes in electrical modifications (have had issues with a remote start). So i may just upgrade the battery and forgo the Voltage Booster, but it sounds like a battery tender may not be enough if i don't drive much daily. I would just go with a regular high CCA lead acid battery so not to mess with things but i would really like to be able to have some backup power for those 2 things. So far that's all the info i have gathered. |
The voltage booster you've mentioned is pretty good and perfectly fine to use. I use a different one with two boost settings but they all get the job done. It is as simple as literally pulling out a fuse and adding it instead and you can reverse the process whenever you wish to do so. That said, I had an Odyssey Group 34 battery that I ran without one of these for well over a year and I would simply plug it into the wall (overnight) with an AC-DC charger once every couple of weeks (sometimes once a month) and it worked perfectly fine. I know a lot of folks who don't even do that and have been fine with the AGM though I would recommend some sort of AC charging to get the most capacity and life out of your battery. They are relatively cheap and if it means a healthy battery for 5+ years then that is really a no brainer especially if you take trips where you do end up cycling close to that 50% discharge point.

If you don't have a 110 outlet in your Garage you should probably buy on of the VB devices. I have a similar situation as I park in an underground garage and don't currently have access to a power source. VB means that I don't have to take the battery into my condo to charge it periodically.

Ok, its time. With temps in the teens and me wanting to be proactive ill be getting a new battery to replace the stock battery from 2019.
Ill be going to get a Odyssey Battery 34-PC1500T Group Size 34 850 CCA if no-one else has another suggestion of the best cranking high capacity battery for my usage as noted in OP. It also appears no-one has this in stock......... |
Well no one had that so I ordered a Odyssey ODP-AGM24F ill be swapping in tomorrow!

Well installed the Odyssey ODP-AGM24F. Wow does my 4Runner turn over fast.... Higher voltage sitting for hours too.
Almost makes me worried it turns over with so much gusto!! lol Still curious 34 vs 24. |
The voltage booster fuse thing is totally safe. Been using it for years without any issues.

Check the chargers owners manual to make sure it can be used on AGM batteries
Also there is no reason to disconnect the battery when charging. See if your charger has the quick connect plug instead of the alligator clips. These attach to the battery terminal bolts and makes it easier to just plug in the charger. Most chargers come with these. |
