2020 for 10K service - CV Boot

3 Attachment(s)
I took my 2020 with 10K into the dealer yesterday for it's second oil change and 10K service. I'm a little disappointed with the outcome and wanted to ask a couple questions. I didn't get charged for anything but did get an invoice that said

CV Boots One Side - Replace $429.67

When I asked about that, they said one was damaged and they were going to replace it but when the technician looked at it, it just needed to be tightened. "everything is fine" I was told.

I took a look at it today and saw that they put a hose clamp on it to tighten it and that there was grease around it that had flung out that wasn't cleaned up. I've hosed it off and cleaned up what I could, but I feel as though they took a shortcut, didn't even bother to clean around it, and now I may be in a situation where it'll give me problems in the future. I'm pretty sure they didn't repack it with grease, I can ask though. I should have looked at it before I signed for everything. I'm disappointed about just using a hose clamp honestly too.

I've included pictures, but I'm wondering if I should go back or say anything. I'm going to keep the truck a LONG time, my previous 4Runner had almost 300K on it, so I'm committed. If there are toyota techs on this board, I'd like to get their opinion and also ask what I should do as a customer. I don't want to be the pain in the ass customer that pisses them off, but I also don't want it to be a problem in the future. I've got a lifetime powertrain warranty but I just don't want problems in the future.

The invoice is attached, along with the pictures of the boot and the grease I cleaned off. The air filters are simple to replace and I already have myslef, I won't pay $80+ to have them do it. I feel like since it's on the invoice, they will get reimbursed from Toyota for it and they didn't really do what is on the invoice.

I would want a proper OEM CV band installed. They are supposed to be oetiker clamps

This has to be legend now as I’ve heard it in so many circles. You might have heard about the service advisor who kept selling all those CV boots to nearly every customer who came through. Broke sales quotas and made all this money. Come to find out his mechanic was slitting every single one that came through his bay.

Jesus Christ you’re under ****ing warranty. Take it back and make them do it right. If THAT fails they aren’t going to warranty it because it’s not factory and it’s not even RECORDED as work having been done by the dealer.

You'd get fired in my shop for trying that stunt. Take it back. It will now likely need a boot from the damage it received from the hose clamp. You may want to find a new dealership.

Drop the stealership in the dumpster and go to another after you tell them to pounds rocks.

That is a shit job done and whoever thinks that that is fixed should be fired or sent back to the quickie lube bay with a spanking :ybrick:

Do you know what size off hand? I want to order a couple.

And they charged 568+ (including shop fees and taxes) back Toyota warranty claims is crazy.
Toyota corporate should address shoddy actions like this.

You should at the very least take it back to be repaired properly.

On my 19 Pro i had both boots and shafts replaced under warranty at about the same mileage. Both were throwing grease all over the place. Service manager looked at it and replaced both under warranty, no questions asked. 30k later not a spec of grease.
TAKE IT BACK!!

I keep a spare boot kit in stock 04427-60131. They are like $45 and have all of the bands, inner and outer boots, plus grease. Not sure what the size or part numbers are for the bands individually.

Mechanic may have broken the OEM band if they didn't use the proper tool. He probably didn't tell anyone and may have installed a used hose clamp. I would go back and ask to speak with the shop foreman. Tell him your invoice doesn't document the improper repair and you could be denied a warranty claim in the future because the dealer will think that you installed the hose clamp.

The CV joint grease doesn't have to be changed or "topped up". The amount you show on the two rags is not enough to merit any concern.

Do you need to go to a different dealer for future services? Perhaps. How many Toyota dealerships are there in Albany, GA? Check their customer ratings. If only one dealership, then do your best to get the shop foreman to understand your concerns and hopefully he will be apologetic while resolving this issue. If some mechanic tried to shortcut this repair when nobody was watching, then it's likely the shop foreman will make sure that doesn't happen again.

I hope this is quickly resolved to your satisfaction. Let us know what happens and be watchful.

Hose clamp? That's excessive vibration waiting to happen. Like the others said, take it back, show the service manager, and make sure they fix it right. I had to have a boot replaced on my wife's Volvo, and didn't even think about doing it myself, since I didn't have a tool for the appropriate clamp.

1. Was the cabin air filter all that dirty? Loose debris like leaves you can shake out. My local Toyota dealer tried to tell me that my cabin air filter was bad because it was "black". But I had replaced it myself with a genuine Toyota activated carbon (black) filter which reduces smells in the A/C system. You can also use a permanent cabin air filter from K&N; when it gets dirty, you just wash it out and refresh the dirt trapping stuff from K&N.
2. A/C refresher service? Don't need unless you live in a very humid area and don't open the outside air (re-circulation off) when you park. There is a TSB (technical service bulletin) about that: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...72826-9999.pdf. If you get an activated carbon filter will help with that.
3. Ethanol Fuel conditioner? Don't need any fuel conditioner if you use Top Tier gas (TOP TIER™ Gasoline Brands) as stated in your owners manual. The 4Runner (and all Toyotas) are not supposed to have high amounts of ethanol (E85 fuel). It will damage the fuel system.
4. Was the engine air filter all that dirty? Again, you can get a permanent engine air filter from K&N that can be washed out and renewed when it is dirty. Toyota used to sell a permanent, washable engine air filter under the TRD logo, but they stopped that recently. 2020 Toyota 4Runner Trd air filter - high flow - PTR4300083 - Genuine Toyota Accessory

What the others have said about the CV boot and hose clamp is all true. I would have a serious talk with the service manager over these issues.

I've researched K&N engine air filters and decided I would never install one on any vehicle. I buy OEM and install it myself. I have not researched K&N cabin air filters.

I would never recommend one, especially with a MAF sensor. Why bother with that for a cabin air filter?

i had the exact same issue on my '19 with the inboard passenger CV boot throwing grease due to the clamp being too loose, at about 17k miles. my understanding is that apparently this isn't too uncommon.

"this should be an easy fix" i thought, stupidly. took it to my local dealer for what was clearly a warranty repair.

- first time back to the dealer, new clamp installed and then immediately began to fail again about 100 miles later
- second time back to the dealer, new clamp installed and then failed again about 500 miles later, and while checking the boot i noticed whatever assclown technician reinstalled the lower control arm castle nut, secured it the way you'd tie up a bag of bread with a paper clip.

- third time back to the dealer, new clamp installed and failed again in about 300 miles.

you see where this is going. at this point i'd had enough, i don't have time for this kind of circus and we need this vehicle running, not in the shop as its used every day for work so i went ahead and got a stainless steel, rolled-edge screw clamp (which has been successful for many other T4R and FJC owners) which installed in about 4 minutes and in the last 3k miles it hasn't had a single issue.

hate to tell you, but that may be the route you need to take.
