1990 4Runner SR5 3.0 Help

I got my daughter this 1990 3.0 4runner. Its in great shape, No hail and just a tiny bit of rust above the rear wheel. I had to replace the alternator which was super easy. But the Speedometer and odometer dont work everything else does RPMS etc. I order the cable but I was also told i need A speed sensor Part 8941135010. I was just looking for insight on the problem.

I would say you're on track seeing as other portions of the gauge cluster are functioning. I believe that's the sensor that plugs into the transmission housing, easy replacement. Keep us posted.

I ended up trying the sensor first with no change. So I dove into the speedo cable which was alot easier than expecting. I got it in and everything is working now, other than the A/c which needs a new compressor. I did get a new bumper and lower valance, Which she want to rhino line black. The grill needs to be replaced at some point it brokes and rattles. I did order a used switch for the sunroof, the original was broke but it seems the motor is also bad. But it is coming along.

Nice looking ride! They don't salt roads in Kansas? Keep up on your valve clearances, esp #6 and it'll last you a long time. Actually it'll last either way, just won't be much fun to drive with burnt valves. Usually when you start seeing rust above the rear wheel there is significantly more rust hiding behind the rear bumper, so might want to pull that off and repair or at least spray some bar and chain oil in there when you have time, but that is much better shape than we see in the northeast. For your AC, you might know already, but they used R12 until '94 so you'll want to evac the system well and get all that oil out, fortunately for parts the pumps are interchangeable with the R134a units from the 3rd gen 4Runners (just need to swap the pulley), and the '94/95 2nd gens. Replace the dessicant dryer while you're in there too.

Well she told me the cruise control went out again, speedo and that are all still working. I checked the fuses, I hate to think that speed sensor went out already. guess its time to start checking stuff again

I've never had a 2nd gen with working cruise control, the vacuum actuated system seems to be pretty unreliable as it ages. Will be swapping the 3rd gen cruise setup into my '90 one of these years but that already has a 3.4. Good luck
