Filter replacement for VVT Oil Control Valves

1 Attachment(s)
Hello all,

Locals (LC79 crowd - same engine as the 4Runner) are replacing these small VVT oil control filters as part of the maintenance regimen..

Found similar threads on Tacoma forums and the T4R 4th gen:
4.0L V6 VVT Oil Control Valves

Some guys on Tiktok with replacement video showing how bad they looked:

Anyone have experience replacing these? Looking to add it to my maintenance list.

I have checked and cleaned mine several times. Many many miles ago, I threw a code that led me to look at the OCV. I found the screens clogged with sludge. I believe my issue was long idling periods in hot weather with a failed PCV valve. I cleaned them with gumout and put them back in, no issues since, been ~150k, and I check every once in a while.

I would not think they would need to be replaced unless the screens had holes in them. Let me know if you have questions. Here is a pic when very dirty. The cone shaped screen piece pulls off of the hollow bolt making it easy to clean.

If you could post some pic's showing the location of these I would be very grateful.

Didn't take any pics of location at the time. Here is the schematic from a post I made back then. Let me know if that helps, if not next time I'm at my truck I'll snap a pic under the hood.

Thanks for this thread. It prompted me to check my filters as I have 216,000 miles on my 10.

They looks great!

Looks nice and clean to me. What’s your OCI Argyle Edison?

+1 ^^^^^ Please tell us what oil you use, oil weight and oil change interval? Those are super clean!

Actually they don't. They're full of scale - see your second pic. I sure hope you sprayed them down with brake cleaner before reinstalling.

That was just some oil on the screen. I washed it off with brakekleen and reinstalled.

I bought this thing with 140K on it from the local dealer. I get free (yeah right) service for life, so they get it every 5K.

I’m assuming these are thems. Probably good to replace the washers if you’re into that sort of thing.

That is correct, and I would have if I had them, but I didn't need to.
