Ford or Chevy
 

yeah so my best friend is getting a new suv so we can go off roading together and he really likes ford and chevy, but hates toyota(i dont know why so dont blame me). So which one would be better for off-roading because i dont want to pull him out of the mud every other weekend:cursin:. also he has about $1,500 to spend on aftermarket accesories. I almost forgot...he's deciding between an Expedition and a Tahoe, and out of my own curiosity which one has more aftermarket parts.

GM products suck. Tell`em to get a Ford.

Those BOTH suck. Hope he has extra cash for repairs.

Tell him to buy the new 2008 Ford Super Duty F-250 with the 6.4-liter "PowerStroke" turbodiesel.

Anything less is just a truck.

Also tell him no not get such a big heavy pig like the Tahoe or Expy. Otherwise you will run circles around him off road.....lol. Also you might tell him to look at an H3 since the other you mentioned really have very limited off road ability.


I really like my Toyota 4R , but when it comes to buying something new/used down the road I'll probably go with something else unless Toyota has something cool out that I like , but since their current styling trend (the wonderful rounded bubble style ) will no doubt follow suit to the 4R, I'll go back to domestic.

Neither of those are good picks for offroad, but if you had to choose the Tahoe I believe would hold up better. The Expedition is very poor reliability wise. Like I said neither choice is good for offroad, as they will both sink in any mud.

Just remember FORD Stands for (Found On Road Dead) Usually for a transmission Problem. The GM products tend to get better MPG and have more HP/Torque. But neither is going to be worth 2 bits off road. I won't even get into the Diesel debate, I don't have that much time.

My Opinion is that the tahoe has more aftermarket parts. But you know what OPINIONS are like!!!

You may need to invest in a winch and some good anchor straps. Both of the vehicles are heavier than the 4Runner.

For off road, a pre 07 Tahoe would be the best. Then new 07 Tahoes sit very low to the road and I don't think they would be very good off road.

If you can look for the Z71 package which is GM's off road vehicle package.:D

If your friend wants something big (3-row seating) that can go off-road, then i would consider: (non-Toyota, non-Lexus)

1. Land Rover LR3 (good off-road, but expensive, horrible reliability)
2. Mercedes GL (decent off-road, but very expensive, possibly so-so reliability)

or my recommendation,

3. Jeep Commander. Now, before you think that i am crazy, remember that you can get a lot of discounts on these Commanders. I am sure that you can get one below invoice with good financing. The 3rd row seating is a bit tight. Resale value may stink in the future because Jeep is planning on discontinuing it after 2009. However, if your friend keeps his car a long time, then it's not a bad choice at all. With it's 4wd system (QuadraDrive II), decent ground and underbelly clearance, good engine power, it can keep up with your 4runner through most stuff. I think that the Commander looks good inside and out, but others may disagree. And yes, there is some aftermarket support for the Commander. And it's not a Toyota or Honda so that should make your friend happy.

Tell him to go get a Dodge Ram 2500 CTD Mega Cab 4X4. Screw the PowerJoke or the DuraSux!!! Cummin's is the only way to go baby!!!!

Plus it wont look like a bloated soccer mom mobile. At least the 4Runners have some style. The Tahoe has NONE other than maybe a cool grille and headlight combo, the rest looks like someone forgot to carve out the blank from the clay model. The ford is better but not by much.

If I had the coin that would be my choice of vehicle in a heartbeat though. With a lift, some big ass tires, tonneau cover, Banks intercooler and programming kit, and a huge 5" exhaust system.

Although the Dodge PowerWagon may not have the Cummin's, the original poster's friend did want off-road capability and thus, the PowerWagon is the more appropriate truck if he were to go that route. Dodge trucks from factory sucks off-road with the exception of the awesome PowerWagon, which will destroy 99% of stock SUVs and trucks out there.

With a winch, lockers, Solid axles, and small "lift" from the factory. You can not go wrong with the PowerWagon when it comes to off road. From the Factory it can go more places thatn the 4Runner straight out of the box.

Next best would be a 94-01 Dodge 1500 or 2500, Solid axles front and rear, Reasonable power with the 5.9L V-8 with a few bolt on mods. Tons of aftermarket parts and lifts out there and they tend to be cheaper because of the solid axels.

A great find would be a 2001 2500 extcab shortbox with the cummins and the NV5600 (6Speed Stick) Tranny. It has a Strong engine, Dana 60 front and Dana 70 or 80 rear (Can't remember for sure). Almost unlimited power with the right mods. I now refer to RamThis last statement!!!!! Obtaining wood;):

But if you want a stock off roader, and your too big to fit in a Rubicon, then the Power Wagon is the way to go.....:D

That's just cruel. Besides, everybody knows that it means Fix Or Repair Daily. Why not a Jeep? Cheap and proven off road.

It also can mean Found On Ret-ard's Driveway :p
