first oil change - new 4runner - before 10k?
I got a new '22 TRD Off Road and I got a total of 4 oil changes to be completed at 10k mile intervals through toyota dealership. I just called in to see if I have the freedom to use those 4 oil changes whenever I want or if I gotta come in around the 10k mile intervals. Turns out I can freely use them... soo question..
To me it seems crazy to wait 10k miles for an oil change even for full synthetic. Should I want to change it prior to 10k on the new rig? Am I wasting an oil change? I'm at 6k miles now. Input appreciated. |
I change my oil and rotate my tires every 5k. Easy to remember. I usually do the first oil change at 1500 or so for breakin. Probably not needed but gives me piece of mind.

I like to get the oil out fairly early on a new engine. I did mine at 1k miles. There is always some break-in material caught by the oil filter. Which is easy to check with the cartridge filter on the 5th gen.
I also did the oil change myself, as I don't need some overly enthusiastic lube-tech kid stripping my skidplate fasteners, or over-torquing the cartridge filter cap. Endless accounts on here of stripped skidplate bolts, and over-torqued filter caps, by dealership lube-tech hacks. Back when I was a mechanic at a Toyota dealer, it was rare to find a lube-tech who took pride in doing it correctly. |

Freshly machined surfaces wear in to each other and shedding metal particles are part of that procedure. The cleaner the oil, the better. I also change the drain bolt to a magnetic one. I did my own at 5K miles. People wait until 10K without issues.

I will do a full oil and diff fluid change when I hit 1,000 miles or so on my 2022. It can't hurt, and I won't be surprised to see metal shaving coming out of the diffs and even engine oil (if I can see it). But I'm ocd about breaking in my motorsport vehicles and cars. Peace of mind that the factory lubes and new parts slag is gone and clean, high quality oil going forward.

IMHO, oil is cheap and 10K miles is an unnecessary gamble if you intend to keep your truck for a long time. Even if you're only going to keep it 100K-200K miles, you're still reducing the odds of minor problems in later years. While a lot of people go extended intervals on certain maintenance items with no reported issue, they are often not keeping their vehicle long enough to prove that out one way or the other. Keep in mind the dealership is most likely using bulk oil (not Toyota's Mobil 1 formula or a premium brand). I would not use that oil for extended intervals. |
I have a 2014 with 145,000 miles on it, and just picked up a TRD PRO in March.
I do the first oil and filter change at 2000 miles and then at 5000. From that point fwd I do oil and filter every 5000. I have recently been talked out of using dept store Mobile 1 (by the gang in this forum - lots of data and a poll that shows its a top choice) The fact base is convincing - the dealer sold Toyota Brand 0/20 is made by Mobile, but does not contain the same additives as the Toyota dealer supplied 0/20. I use Toyota OEM oil filters, and switched out the plastic oil filter holder / housing for the aluminum OEM part. To be fair the plastic one on the 2014 was showing wear after about 10 oil filter changes ~ 45,000 miles, as a result of doing oil and filter changes. I had read about them becoming fatigued / stripped and wanted to avoid a nightmare of not being able to get it off. As you see above - dealer lube guys are lees than careful when dong a oil change, over torquing - filter housings / casings, drain plugs, and of course "stripping the bolts that hold the skid plates" in place. So.... I do my own work --- I feel blessed, because I have a killer garage / guy cave, and actually like doing small projects. It's also good to get underneath the 4runner and check all fluids, and easy to access components like the air filter ----just avoids surprises. Not all dealers linked from that site offer the same discount so I had to use some trial and error to find the best one. I also had to figure out what part number my specific dealer will actually fulfill. (They will only sell by the quart part number - 002790WQTE01 for $5.88, YMMV) It's more expensive than the Warren oil with a Walmart/Amazon/Kirkland label. Although, it's actually cheaper than the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5 quart jug on walmart.com and cheaper than some oil sold at auto store chains. |
