Blower motor not working on my 08 4R Sport Edition
 
Hi all,

Need help!

My blower is not working at all. Sometime in the fall of last year the blower was intermittent. Co worker mentioned it might be the resistor, which I replaced with a new one and everything was fine. About a month ago, almost a year later the blower motor completely stopped working.

I also bought a new blower from amazon(Cheap one), swapped it in, and absolutely nothing.

I also bought a new blower relay, installed it and nothing.

Checked the Heater2 7.5a fuse and it's fine. Did the fuse reseat thing to reset the blower, still nothing.

I have read a bunch of stuff on it through Google and forums. I checked just about everything everyone suggested.

60A fuse is working. This supplies power to the blower relay, which works because I can hear clicking and the Heater2 7.5a fuse is getting power and is still good because I metered it.

I metered the connector at resistor, it has power.

I metered the connector at the blower motor. It has power, the voltage also varies there when changing the fan speed.

All signs point to the blower motor since power is at the connector and changes voltages when you choose different fan speeds.

But new blower was installed. Is it possible old blower is pooched and I got a new one that's DOA?

The only other thing I've read is something about resetting all of the ECMs and CPU's, circuits or whatever that have a memory by disconnecting battery overnight. Which I am trying now and have to see tomorrow if that changes anything.

Does anyone have any other suggestions I may not have tried? If disconnecting the battery overnight method doesn't work, my only other solution is to order another blower motor, this time the factory Denso one.

Have you checked the new blower motor to see if it will work by connecting straight to the battery with some jumper wires?

It seems that everything else is doing what it should be doing so testing the new motor would be my next step before spending any more money.

How about the ground? Did you check to see that the motor is getting a good ground?

Hi, thanks for reply.

I never thought of connecting the blower directly to battery.

But I tried this morning. Both old and new blower works as advertised.

Also by disconnecting the battery overnight didnt do anything.

Anyone know what the correct voltages are supposed to be at the resistor connector and blower connector?

My results are as follows;

Blower Connector - Off 0V, Low 9.9-10V, Low-Med 9.3V, Med 8.56V, Hi 11.77V

Resistor Connector - Off 0V, Low 11.63V, Low-Med 11.78V, Med 11.9V, Hi 12 V

Does this seem right to anyone or are they off?

Follow up on more troubleshooting.

I read somewhere else to try a jumper wire on the resistor connector. Jumper wire on the two outer connectors and if the blower runs then it's the resistor.

This makes sense now, since the last time this happened I changed the resistor.

But this only lasted about a year.

May go with a higher end resistor this time to see if it lasts.

Well I'm off to order a new one.

Thanks for all the help, I will update if the new resistor fixes my problem.

If the connection to the motor has 2 wires, one is positive, the other is ground. If there is only 1 wire then that's the positive. Ground would be through the metal case screwed to the metal body.

A 12 volt line to the motor that has a ground will run full speed. The resistor in the positive wire doesn't slow down full speed. For other speeds the resistor drops the voltage, generating heat in the resistor. The slower the speed, the more resistance and heat.

I had a '91 Camry that used different lengths of coiled wire as resistors for the 3 lower speeds. The low1 and low2 speeds burned out, so I had only high1 and high2. I had an old electric space heater that I was throwing out so I cut a couple of pieces of the heater wire to lengths that would be about the same as what had burned out and replaced the bad ones. Worked out great for as long as I had that car (29 years total).

I'm back with an update.

So blower fan is now working. My new resistor finally came in. This time I installed a more expensive one($120), vice the cheapo one($35) I installed last year.

Only time will tell how long the newer more expensive one will last.

I took some readings on the connector on the blower motor side.

Old resistor readings:

Off = 0V
Low = 11.63V
Low-Med = 11.78V
Med = 11.9V
Hi = 12.00

New Resistor Readings:
Off = 0V
Low = 10.51V
Low-Med = 9.69V
Med = 8.78V
Hi = 11.94V

So clearly it was the resistor after all.

However after the new resistor was installed. All speed settings working with key to on position, vehicle not started. Also tested with vehicle started and all settings worked. Then turned off vehicle and it sat over night. This morning now the fan only works at one speed in all settings. It's either on the highest setting or the 2nd highest setting.

I do have a newer blower motor I am going to install that as well today. I did read somewhere that if the current blower is already starting to fail, this could cause the resistor to burn out quicker. So new blower it is.

Unless someone knows what else could be causing the blower to run at one speed suddenly. I just hope I'm not burning out the new resistor already.

Back again with another update.

My blower now seems to be fixed. It appears the issue with a blower that's on it's way out can cause a resistor to go "Kaput".

I installed a new $120 still with old blower in. The new resistor, gave me one fan speed symptom after only less than 1 hour of use, stuck on Hi.

Now that I wasted money on an expensive resistor, relay and a blower. Still back to square one. But now at least the blower is working.

This time I decided to go back to Amazon cheap resistors, ordered 2 this time at $35 each. Installed my new blower then the new cheap resistor once they came in. Everything works now as it should after 3 days of usage, hopefully for at least another year.

But now I have another replacement resistor and a relay on hand. Lol
