Recommended OBD dongles for 4th

After all this and needing to clear codes, I wanted a scanner and was looking at bluetooth dongles. Saw a few posts claiming a few apps can do that, monitor readouts, even disable seat belt chime.

So do we have a list of proven dongles and apps or anyone using these? No restricted by price. Be also cool if one can sync up with in dash conversation screen for real time monitoring or usage.

I've had the Veepeak dongle with the OBD Fusion app for the past 2 years and it's been great. Used it when driving through in Arizona/Texas in the summer to monitor engine/transmissions temps. Never let me down.

OBD Fusion is free to download, but need to pay extra for the toyota package (which you will need if you want transmission temps).

I also have a Veepeak, I bought it back in 2016 and it still works fine. I have both the free Torque lite and paid Torque apps on my Android phone. I use the free one for basic stuff as it's simpler to use. Recently I bought a Foxwell with the Toyota config so I could find a bad ABS sensor and do an idle relearn on another car. Some things you need a higher end bidirectional scanner, seat belt chime is probably one of them.

I have two dongles: An OBDLinkMX+ for general use and a VCXNano for Techstream. Both were $100 when I bought them. The OBDLink is great for general diagnosis and lets me read all my modules except SRS. I can setup data monitoring on my phone or pair it to a headunit really easy while having some of the highest data transfer speeds of most dongles I could find. BlueDriver & Veepeak were close contenders but I am happy with my purchase.

The VCXNano is great for Techstream because its wired or wireless connection and if I spent a little more I could get a universal multi vendor dongle. I originally ran it with an older Lenovo Thinkpad but recently loaded the VXDiag Suite to my surface tablet and its a way better experience or at least as much as it can be with TS. Getting TS up and running was a bit tricky but it sure beats using the cheaper dongles and cables everyone recommended to me before with 15 year old versions of TS.

Wow. Thank you for adding two new contenders. The vx nano claims to allow you to program new keys. That would be nice to do without doing the annoying programming without one. Is there any proven apps that can do seat belt chime, keys/fobs, even if you have to purchase the premium app?

I did order the veepeak but may return after seeing the new contenders. I just want to get the best one that will allow me to do most the unique stuff and diagnostic work for my money, otherwise I've been looking at the thinkdiag2 which claims to do all the high end stuff for all cars at the low price of $140/year. I don't do enough to justify it unless I drum up locals to pay to skip a dealer, but the super cheap ones may not have enough to offer. I need that sweet spot middle lol

Where do you get a newer version of TS? I only have one that works on an old Win7 laptop. Sucks!

I like my ScanGuage. It keeps my phone free and its visible all the time. I am able to pull/clear codes with it as well.

My uncle is looking to get ScanGauge. Good to hear it can clear codes, too! Got to finish installing the bumper, fender flares, and winch on the Silverado before we can take the 4Runner in for the mods.

ScanGauge and UltraGauge, like I run, will both clear codes and show a ton of information. It really comes down to which one you like the looks of the most. They are about the same price and both quality units. I ran the ScanGauge when I had my '99 Tacoma.

I have the same Veepak referenced earlier in this thread. I use it mainly for transmission temperature. I know you weren’t concerned about price but you can get that for ~$25 on Amazon plus the Fusion app and the Toyota add on for another ~$25. Not bad for around $50.

I ordered the veepeak and it showed up. Downloaded torq pro and car scanner with toyota packages, ect. I don't really need to monitor temps but its a plus with reading and clearing codes. I haven't played with it yet but soon. I suppose I'll try and call thinkdiag 2 company and get specifics on what exactly they can do and how in depth for the other things I want. Right now I need to get into the TPS system to see why my light is one even though the tires are at correct psi. I don't think veepeak can do that in these apps.

I've been using BlueDriver for a couple years now and it is by far the best Bluetooth dongle out there. Allows you to scan codes on all modules, access to Mode 6 data, live data and freeze frame. Highly recommend.
