Am I crazy? 24 Limited over a 24 LC?
 

A little history, been a member here for many years. I had a 2007 SR5 then a 2015 SR5 Premium and was a regular back then. I stepped out the 4runners and have had a couple full size vehicles while chasing youths sports and kids.

I'm now back in the market for this size of rig and was 100% sure I was going to get a 2024 Land Cruiser as soon as I could get my hands on one. I love the looks and the center diff and awd is perfect for the north country I live in.

That is until today and pricing came out. A LC with real leather similar to the TR4 limited its over 70K.

With the prospect of saving 20k the limited TR4 is starting looking pretty damn good. Having been out of a TR4 for several years what is the opinion around here? Am I crazy to buy a 2024 limited?

I don't think you are crazy. I love my '21 Nightshade (limited). I was/am considering the new LC as a replacement in the next few years. However, given the recently released pricing, I am no longer interested.

If i am going to pay nearly $70k, I will get the 2024 GX Overtrail. It's still 5 seater (preferred over 7), should have a lower deck (TBD) because no hybrid/batteries), the V6 TT is more exciting, and the costs are so close.

Don't get me wrong, i like the new LC, but for the cost I would go 2024 GX Overtrail. Otherwise, I will wait to see what the 6th gen 4runner is and save $$.

Lastly, the 5th gen already has amazing resale value, and I'm willing to bet that will only be increased after 6th gen release. The crowd looking for simplicity and reliability above all else will pay even more to have a used 5th gen rather than get the more complex 6th gen. So, your '24 Limited will maintain its value very well and if you decide you want to move to LC or 6th gen, you will be in a great position in a few years.

Depends on what you want. If you're bent on leather, and also bent on full-time 4WD, and also bent on the new price being low, 4Runner Limited seems like your play. Compromises including getting 17mpg combined with no power, in stark contrast to the new hybrid powertrain.

If it were me, I think I'd skip the leather and get a base Land Cruiser 250 for $57k. On the plus side, 4Runners are getting discounted deep right now, like $3-4k in most places.

You could just keep your rigs for a while and see how the upcoming 4Runner plays out (it will definitely offer leather cheaper than an LC250), unless you want one of the "last call" old school 4Runners.

AWD is nice to have in my area so the limited would be my go to trim.

I have thought about a base model but dang, 60k for cloth seems steep. Guess I just have sticker shock.

I own a 4th gen with limited slip, and 5th gen with limited slip, and even in ice, i never have to use 4wd. I have a great set of tires on both and literally go anywhere i want in 2wd. The only time i have had to use 4wd is pulling something up a steep slick hill, other than that, 2wd with positive traction gets me everywhere i have needed to go. I think good tires are a big part in this.

The new Land cruiser is a bargain in comparison to the previous Land Cruiser if you are looking at price only, but yes its very pricey for a small size 4runner based vehicle. I couldnt pay $60k for a vehicle with cloth interior and basically no real ammenities. And there is no real way i would pay mid $70s for a "fancy" 4runner. The AWD system wont do anything that the part time 4wd system wont do when you turn the knob.

I personally like the Limited 4runner, in its price in comparison to the Land Cruiser. The Lexus GX models are nice too, albeit a little pricey as well. I like the 4runners for their price point and looks.

Keep in mind that you should avoid the first year or 2 of a new model.

Thats very true, the first year of a new model can have issues.

First post but I'm shopping a TRD ORP, but also scoping 2022/2023 used GX that are in a similar price as the 4R I would consider. 2022 GX got the better infotainment. Can't recall what else if anything. If I could find one of those nori green GX, that would be very tempting.

Either (the 4.6L or the 4.0L) are going to be considered bulletproof classics in 2-3 years when the inevitable kinks in these little 4-banger turbos and new models surface. Just look at the lines of Tundras sitting on dealer lots after Consumer Reports stopped recommending the new generation due to the slew of reliability issues.

My local dealer lot has 2 Prius, 2 Corollas, 4 Camrys, 6 4Runners, about 15 RAV-4s, and about 40 Tundras. Nobody wants a $70K headache.

The way I figure it -- my 2018 4Runner is still worth about $35 K, so I would only have to come up with $21 K (plus tax and license) for the base, $56K LC. That I could do.

Add the FJ cruiser to that list of bulletproof classics. To buy an FJ today, you have to pay an arm and a leg.

The 4Runner is already a bulletproof classic. The resale value on them is extremely high. I recently looked at used car prices for the 4Runner and found out that my 2018 is worth about $35K, about the same that I paid for it 5 years ago.

I have also thought about a 2022 GX. I'm locked into my local dealer who is a buddy but he may be able to buy one used off the auction.

More than likely I will do a new limited in the end. Seems like the best bang for the buck.

Not at all; I think it really just depends on what your priorities are. Personally I think the LC is priced too high compared to the better equipped GX550 models at this point (if I'm going to spend $70K+ on a truck I'd rather just go into the Lexus).

Another hit against the LC is the compromised rear cargo volume due to the hybrid batteries in my opinion.

I think you'd be crazy to NOT get the 24 limited. That 20k difference at even $4/gallon and 17 mpg is 85000 miles or about 7 years of gas. I think the question you should be asking.....Is a new unproven LC platform worth 7 years of gas to you? That's without factoring in proven reliability/resale. Also seems like you enjoy them having two previously. To each their own but you already know the answer to this
