Is this poor mile performance?
My T4R is a '98 with a K&N Filter and 265/75/16 Tires. No other Modifications. According to the posts in the forum almost all the members get an an average of 17/20 mpg. Mine gets -always- 9/16 wich seems very low.
I always use the correct amount of tire pressure, never use cargo or heavy foot. The injectors where cleaned 10,000 miles ago, just installed new spark plugs and use 93 octane gasoline. Do you guys think something is wrong? Thanks, JJ |
Well to start running 93 is a waste since 87 is just fine for a non-SC'd Runner.
Is 9 what you are getting around town? How many miles are you seeing per tank because if I was getting 9mpg mine would be at 135 a tank. I get 16-17 on overall driving and average roughly 240-50ish a tank with my heavy foot. How are you figuring your mileage? Dividing the miles per tank with gallons you fillup with at your next stop right? |
Well, the way a I calculate my MPG is by filling up the tank the most I can, filling it up about 20 gallons or 75 liters. Then, when the gas light lit I fill it up again and then divide the the total of miles by the number of gallons it take to fill the tank full again. And those are the number I get.

Well your calculation method is good, but are you really using 75 liters? US 4Runners only have an 18 gallon tank (68 liters), and usually have 2-3 gallons left after driving 50 miles with the fuel warning light on.

Something still must be up since the majority of people still can only fillup with 16 gallons at the most (a bit over a full gallon is unuseable since the pump doesn't sit on the bottom) and you shouldn't overfill since it's very harmful to the fuel system since gas needs to room to expand. Once it clicks fill it again til the 2nd click and then call it full is a safe way to prevent overfilling.

I read your other post on shifting techniques and have to say that if you drive the automatic as if it is manual and utilize all the features on the vehicle for drivetrain mode selections then you will definitely see a decrease in gas mileage. Obviously engaging 4WD will eat up gas but so will the ECT (used to rev higher in each gear) and using engine braking (downshifting or disabling o/d). And Ron is correct in that the amount of fuel you believe you are putting in exceeds the fuel tank capacity for your vehicle.
