Burning grease / Burning rubber smell?

Preface: I took the car to the dealer for an oil change and they said on of my CV boots had a rotted gasket and was slowly leaking grease (or whatever is in it) and should be replaced. I came back later to get it replaced and was told that it would be about a 2 hour procedure. I was in the waiting room for 45 minutes when the service rep came out and said his mechanic was able to find a quicker way to replace the gasket and only took them 35 minutes.

The service bill says RR CV boot clamp, does this means Right Rear?

Could the smell be coming from the CV boot grease leaking from a faulty repair hitting the exhaust?

Also, if this is the case, I have been noticing the smell intermittently for about two weeks and have put about 1500 miles on the car since leaving the dealer. If the CV boot was leaking for this long and I drove all those miles could permanent damage have been caused, and if so is the dealer liable?

Thanks for you wonderful future input :D

Could the smell be coming from the CV boot grease leaking from a faulty repair hitting the exhaust? A little grease from the driveshaft on the exhaust or some of the grease from the clamp repair; either one could do it. A good oil change will include a driveshaft greasing.

If the CV boot was leaking for this long and I drove all those miles could permanent damage have been caused, and if so is the dealer liable? It's hard to know. If they were happy to reclamp it then it's probably fine.

Thanks for the input CJ!

I had the clamp replaced and it was only after that I started noticing a strong burning smell. I have driving about 2 weeks / 1500 miles after (so after the clamp was replaced and I had noticed the smell). My concern was that since the dealer did a job that I hear from most members as taking 2 hours in only 35 minutes that it could be faulty and not produce a good seal, thus causing a leak.

If it was just excess grease from the repair or grease from the drive shaft could I still be smelling the burn off at 1500 miles later?

I'd have them look at it again. It sounds like the 35 min repair may not have held.
