newbie- first question
My truck drives straight- no alignment issues. However, at any speed, the steering wheel has a steady vibration. It drives me batty. It just shakes a little bit both ways. I've had the tires balanced and I switched the front driver's side and rear wheel and same thing. BTW she has 164k. Help would be most appreciated!!!!
The search results pulled up information for the recent model t4r so I assume that won't be applicable here. Thanks! |
Have you replaced the steering rack bushings? This is a common issue on the 3rd Gens. This is one of those mods that was instantly noticeable when I did it.
Steering Rack Bushings: Done, but I have a Q! - YotaTech Forums Here's another... I'm sure you can find a write up local to this site as well. Toyota Maintenance: Steering Rack - Bushing Replacement -batsoff |
Have you switched the front passenger tire as well? If it vibrates at any speed, then it probably is not a tire issue. Tire vibrations normally vary with speed. Sounds more like a steering or suspension issue.

Don't rule out the tire balance possibility yet. I had to call several shops before I found someone who knew what a lug centric tire balance was and that some vehicles required it. My vibration issues were in the 65-70 mph range and it didn't matter which tire was where; the lug centric balance eliminated all the vibrations. I was amazed at how many tire shops and even dealerships had no idea what I was talking about. Another common issue is the u-joints being worn. They are supposed to be lubed every oil change and are frequently neglected. When they wear out, it can cause vibrations too.
