Tailpipe Mod Complete! (4th gen)

I want to thank RPC for finally lighting the fire...http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-ge...ifference.html I know a few others have done it a long time ago too. They got me thinking about it and RPC's install nudged me over-the-edge:)

I did the tailpipe mod! I love it and the only regret I have is I didn't do this the day I took delivery of the T4R.

Noise: Almost no difference. The only time I hear any difference is a tiny bit more growl just off of idle when accelerating from a dead stop. Once under way there's NO difference.
Performance: Better mpg:D How you ask? My new tailpipe weighs less than OE pipe and resonator:lmao:
Smell: All but gone... The only way I could catch even a whiff of exhaust is to floor it from 40-65mph with the back window all the way down, the sunroof open 4inches and all the other windows up. Anyone who's tried this configuration knows it's a worst-case scenario. If the back window is up even half-way no smell!

Awesome $65 mod!

If you started this mod, it will become epidemic like your FJC springs :) J/K

Q:
1. Is the resonator really heavy? it could be a very effective mod when removing unwanted weight in the 4Runner.

2. If it is, will it not affect the weight distribution in the 4Runner considering the gas tank and the battery is in the left side?

Thanks!

No the resonator is not heavy at all, would not affect the weight balance. The muffler and the resonator might affect the weight distribution but not enough to notice.

I was kinda joking:D The difference weight is negligible, 5-6lbs difference, tops.

Funny how I was just thinking about this today. I'm just itching to cut the resonator off and turn this pipe to somewhere else!

Very nice Chris!

Jig sawing off my resonator was the best performance mod I've done. My mom has a SS/T Dodge with the upgraded exhaust. My 4Runner sounds exactly like her truck. Especially when I floor it. She roars!

I just hacked off my resonator the other day because my gibson muffler came in! I'm itching to get it all done but I've decided I should probably fix my a/c first, then I'll do the exhaust and then the FJ suspension that's sitting in my storage.

Great pics! I'm definitely taking them to the shop with me.

I can verify the slight drone when accelerating but other than that, no difference.

You have influenced yet another one of my mods, thanks Chris!

This has been on my mod list for a while, I just can't find a decent exhaust shop (locally) to do the work. I'm really considering just hacking it off and using a turn down tip to have it dumped right after the axle, not sure if that'd work/be safe though.

See, told ya' it was $60 well spent!

Looks great, I like the profile of the tip too.

Did you do the welding yourself? If the tailpip assembly comes off easy I have an 80 amp welder I could use...I've bn wanting to do the same thing, but would like to upgrade for better airflow, just don't want the louder noise along w/ most aftermarket pipes. Good pics, if I can pull the whole tailpipe to get my welder around I'll be doing the same thing soon!

Granted I'm putting in a gibson can as well but I was getting quotes this week and heres what I got:
Meineke: about 2 hours for both the tailpipe reroute and gibson install, labor rate of $97/hr -> $184
Local shop: anywhere from 1 to 3 hours so $80-240
Custom Exhaust Shop: $80-100 for it all. Needless to say, I'm gonna go there. I'm trying everything I can not to go do it today, I really should use the money for other things right now...

So, for now, I just have the resonator hacked off for sound test. I forget where but in another thread about this someone said they hacked it off and left it right next to the tire under the truck for a few years without problems. They also did it with their previous t4r and never had problems so I'm not too worried about it just hanging for now.

Looks Great!!

I would love to do this mod. Does anybody know if it would void any warranty? I have the extended 100,000 miles warranty and only have about 35,000 on it now so I don't want to go messing around with anything that the stealership can blame me for.

WOW I LOVE that! Looks great!!!

dsandman87 05-21-2010 02:32 PM

That's awesome! Probably going to be my first mod on my new 4Runner...

andyman32392 05-21-2010 02:34 PM

IMO I think you should put a tip on the end of it.
