tent?
 

I think saw a 4runner that had a tent attached to the side of it. I remember seeing something like it on the pontiac Aztec when they were advertising on earlier seasons of Survivor.

Has anyone seen something like this for the 4 Runner? Perhaps the guy did a quick modification to his tent.

this isn't off the side, but rather off the back. dunno how good it is, I personally take one of my sierra designs tents w/ me...they've done me good when backpacking, I figure they'll do me fine for drive-up-type camping as well...

I know there was a customizer that did some stuff for the land rovers that made a platform on top for (I guess) safari-type camping...don't remember who tho...

YIKES! $479 for that! I think I'll just park next to a shade tree and I won't have to worry about tripping over stakes and strings. Plus I will have more $ for "real" mods.

yea...very pricey...but it comes with the chairs and table.

My tent
 

I have a high quality tent made by 1 of the top tent companies that is a real attach to the hatch tent. I originally got it for a mini-van years ago and it is a great way 2go. It attaches completely to the rear opening ant tightens with a draw strap setup. It has a deep well to step out of the vehicle and into an ante-chamber for the tent (airlock;): ) and a zip door on the tent for privacy. Worked great for seperating the kids from the parents.

That looks pretty cool, kgluek! And, it looks like it's only $99.00 dollars! Not bad.

SUV Tent

Seems like a quick set up and not bad for road trips. Although for long term trips, I think I might still go with the conventional tent since one would need to break down the tent everyday to drive around some of these National Parks.

By the way, if you want to leave the windows of your SUV rolled down during camping (sleeping in back, or setting up one of these hatch tents) here's a tip posted by Gbizzle at Xterraownersclub.com:

"I made some window screens for like 10 bucks for the rear windows of my X. Buy some window screen from Home Depot or Lowes then some of that magnetic tape and have a hot glue gun round. Cut the screen glue some of the magnet around the edges and there you go you can leave the windows open and no bugs."

that's very similar to what I did and is mentioned on the second page of the thread Gromulus just posted. I like my design better. The difference is I used thick thread (about baseball thread weight) to attach the magnets to the screen.

the reason is that where I live (texas), it gets quite hot and hot glue tends to ooze (go figure) and not hold as well in hot weather. I didn't want to a) have the screen come loose and not be able to repair it while camping and/or b) have to clean hot glue off the paint of my vehicle because it oozed.

Not to mention that by using thread, it stays very flexible and all the screens can be rolled into a small tube quite easily. :cool:

Excellent links, 2004Runner! I particularly like the tent that stands alone or can be connected to the back of the truck. That way, I don't need to unload everything and when I go trailriding, I can leave the sleeping items in the tent without disassembling everything and still keep certain luxuries in the truck for offroad chowing. Besides, the truck now serves as an extra bunk for kids, friends, or whoever you meet on the road. :)

As far as the magnets are concerned, I haven't had experiencing with glue melting, but it makes sense. Unfortunately, not all of us are talented enough to seam things up on our own (I'm not even sure if my girlfriend knows anything about sewing). But, that is certainly the best option.

How about those seam strips that you use with an iron? I used that with some with a velcro enclosure I used on one of my tents. It worked great in the California and Utah deserts.

Lastly, kglue, are your magnets exposed or are they "encased" in the material? I would think that surrounding the magnets completely with the material would help prevent scratches. And providing that either the material is thin & durable enough or that the magnets are strong enough (or both), this would be the best solution while ensuring a bug-proof seal.
