Firefox doesn't work as well as IE explorer on this software
 

I've noticed that the new post aren't highlighted in yellow (the little yellowish icon on the left of the list of threads) like it is in IE Explorer. I'm assuming this is an issue with using Mozilla Firefox for a browser.

Anyone else having this problem too? It's strange, because on the list of all the different topics of threads (general, maint., gallery, etc.) the yellow icons show up fine indicating new threads/replies in certain topics. But clicking on that topic, all the threads are listed and none are marked as new. (highlighted)


Another thing I noticed too is that the text box you type your message into isn't the full width of the screen - only about 34 characters wide or so.

Actually, I've been using Firefox for quite a while. Only issue I've seen is that the box for typing in posts is narrower than in IE6. Small price to pay for using it, though.

Sometimes, I have seen that if I post then go back to the main page of the forum, all of the new post indicators are gone. Just assumed the forum thought I had read everything. When that happens, I just look at the timestamps to see what I want to read.

One thing I've noticed of late is the number of people complaining about how this site or that site doesn't work right with Firefox. Seems like the supposed benefits of Firefox (versus IE or something else) don't always outweigh the costs.

Actually, the only place I've seen tht Firefox doesn't work (as opposed to working the same as IE6) is on sites or with applications specifically designed for IE. We have a few at work that are IE only, and of course Windows Update is another good example of an IE-only tool.

The OP said he was having problems here. I don't suppose that vBulletin was 'specifically designed for IE', was it?

Anyhow, I just felt like stirring things up a bit. :D

I don't think vBulletin was designed to be browser-specific. Then again, I've been wrong before!

vBulletin may not have been designed specifically for IE, but they probably used IE for 99% of their testing, so they just don't catch bugs on other browsers.

that being said, i've only used firefox here, so i have nothing to compare with. but at least on linux, this site (and other vBulletin sites) works perfectly for me. i've never run into any issues.

...and therein lies the ultimate question. Is the 'bug' with this site, with IE, or with Firefox? Or is this site truly using IE specific codes that are not part of the HTML standard?

I've noticed one thing regarding my original thread and thought I'd post it here in case anyone knew how to fix it.

With the new message icons, they correctly show up on the main list of the forums, but when you click on an actual forum, there aren't any new message icons.

Well, I've noticed that if there are new messages while I have been browsing that the new message icon will correctly show up. And this is from various forum to forum. So I think there is a part of the code that is checking the last visited date incorrectcly. Not quite sure of how one would go about fixing this. But my guess is that Internet Explorer has a last visited date value (cookie) that holds it's value, while Firefox's value (cookie) somehow is updated when you go from the main list of forums to a specific forum.

Anyone have any ideas? Would be nice if this software was Firefox-friendly. It's a much better browser than IE IMO.

I've noticed that whenever I use IE (rarely) I then have to do a cleanup with "No Adware" to get rid of cookies, spyware and other parisite software. Never happens with Firefox

I have used Netscape for the longest of time. I haven't noticed any problems with this site. I tried Firefox about a year ago and also noticed that many sites are NOT set up to handle all of the little perks of Firefox browser. I will try using Firefox again when it becomes more popular. I rarely or NEVER use IE unless a platform specifically calls for it.

Well, as a follow up to this thread I wanted to pass on something interesting I recently heard about.


Try installing the Maxthon browser. It's the best of both worlds between IE and Firefox. It displays all the pages correctly, based on IE, and also has all the slick options and speed of Firefox. It also allows installation of the Google bar, pretty sweet.

I'm fairly impressed with it.

And what's really good, is that it displays T4R.org perfectly!!!
