Question Locking Differential

I was up playing with my 97 Limited this weekend in the snow and was doing well, flying along in 4WD HI until I bounced out of the ruts I was following and on to the unpacked powder. After coming to a sudden stop, wheels spinning, I first tried 4LO, but wheels still continued to spin. So, being confident that I was still not out of options, I pushed my Locking RR Diff button and hoped for the best. The indicator light blinked and blinked. I waited for two minutes, still blinking! I tried every combination...foot on the brake pedal, 4HI, neutral, etc... But, it just blinked at me, mocking me really. I finally ended up shoveling the truck out with the help of a ranger (who also got stuck next me), but I was ticked off that the locking diff failed me. Has anyone else run into this issue? Am I doing something wrong or is my next stop the dealership for a diagnostic?

mmartin1,

If you have tried the above, then your gears might be worn. Maybe you should have your Dealer/local mechanic look at it.

If you want to read more about your e-locker, check this link out:

"The only problem with the Toyota electric locker, besides being slow to switch states, is that the electric motor appears vulnerable to damage."

Hope this helps (a little)....
