Lastly, I repeated the first step a couple times and got the tape to a thickness of three layers. I then took it for another road test, and it is dead silent from overhead. Think my problem is solved! Pics of the finished tape:

If you look, you can see that the ends of the layers next to the roof rack supports, are staggered. The innermost layer is shortest, and the outermost layer is longest to protect the ends of the strips. Also, I took these pictures before I tilted the sunroof up and pressed the tape against the inside of the roof panel with my fingers - the tool I made was more or less to just get the tape out of the way and not get torn off when I raised the sunroof to access the roof panel. Hope this helps someone. My own sanity has now been preserved.

This is awesome. My sunroof had a lot of excess play so I tried the Durapore tape as well. My sunroof has been near silent. I wish the tape stuck a little better to the metal, but overall this has been very effective. Thanks for posting this.

2007 4Runner Rattling noise sunroof Ceiling

I have been reading through these threads about noises in the sunroof. I have the same annoying rattle. I was at the dealer yesterday and they quoted me $3300 to fix it -- YIKES! I am willing to try some of the fixes mentioned in the threads, but I have a question or two. If I try the White Lithium grease idea, will the sunroof/moonroof still function? What about the tubing and/or washer fix? Will the sunroof still function? I like to open and close the sunroof so I want to make sure it still will work. Thank you!

4X4Runner, what part of Charlotte are you located in? Thanks for the pictures and info. I hope this is a perm fix for this issue.

After a couple of years of dealing with this sunroof rattle issue and having Toyota replace everything except for the glass under warranty. The noise has come back. It is play in the assembly cable that causes play in the hinge. The hinge is the arm that tilts it up/down and open/close. The rear portion of the glass vibrates and can be pushed up/down by hand. I am going to give this a shot before I seal the sucka shut for good with clear 100% silicon.

The grease/washer method will still allow the sunroof to function, as will the tape fix.

Darklight - did the Durapore work for you? Mine has been silent ever since I added it. I did have an issue with the tape peeling off and needing to be reapplied after opening and closing the sunroof many times, but for the few minutes it takes to reapply it is worth it.

One lesson I learned is that you can't stretch the tape when you apply it, as it will contract and mess up the corners. Pull it carefully off of the roll as you go, and let it shrink back a little and apply it without pulling on it. Also, lotta lotta denatured alcohol to be rid of ANY grease on the metal surface will also make the tape stay in place better.

Sorry to be offline so much. Life happens!

Oh - to answer your question about my location, I live west of Charlotte in Gaston county. Mount Holly area. Where are you?

Rattling sunroof when open

My rattle only happens when it is fully open and I'm on a washboard road. If I grab the front of the glass and hold it down firmly it stops. Its like the hinges or springs that suspend the glass in the ceiling are bottoming out. I don't think this is an easy fix like everyone else is suggesting. I've found that closing the sunroof just slightly solves the issue but hopefully driving around like this wont cause any other issues. My past sunroof problems were not cheap!

Read a lot of good treads on this topic and decided to take my own stab at it.

Found some small zip ties (of course all I have is red) and ran them around the aforementioned rod:

The trick here is after you cut the excess off, push the "stub" IN towards the center. It fits perfectly in the groove the rod is in and gives tension, thus ceasing the rattle.

I used three zip ties on each side (equally spaced) and it seems to be working pretty well so far.

That might work if your rods are what is causing the rattle. On mine the rear portion literally moves up/down about half an inch due to play in the hinge assembly. At 50 mph the sunroof would flap up/down causing a crazy rattle. If you push up on the rear corner and it moves up more then an a sixteenth of an inch this may be your problem. Only way to fix it is replace the whole assembly.

Video of mine. Closed all the way

Did anyone try to replace the glass weatherstrip. Mine rattles like Darklight and 4x4runner. I think the weatherstrip attached to the glass has dried out and shrunk sitting in the sun (my rear window weatherstrip just fell apart too).

I was told they couldn't replace the weatherstripping by itself from the dealership back when they replaced the hinge assembly and what not. Looks like this is an option though. I wouldn't hesitate to say this might fix a lot of people's issues.

Talking to a service guy at a dealership he also suggested changing the weatherstrip
Looking at parts website it seems you can order this for an 08 but not an 07.
I wonder if it is glued to the glass in older models. I will probably just order the 08 weatherstrip and report back.

Any updates on the weatherstripping replacement?
