back firing

Ive been working on a customers 2005 4runner v6, that has a back firing though the intake and also hesitates for a second. the way to duplicate the problem is to accel from a stop ... no codes, fuel pressure normal, no intake leaks, timing normal. has anybody come across this problem or have any suggestions.

Your a Toyota trained ASE mechanic, and your asking us schleps if we know how to fix a Runner?

Bad gas? How many miles? With HVAC on/off?

Backfiring through the intake?

Sounds like bad timing or a bad intake valve (weak valve spring?).

I would try a compression check on each cylinder...but it does sound a little strange.

On older cars back fire through the intake or carb meant the timing was off, but on modern cars, this is all computer controller. Having said that, the computer relies on sensors for timing and feedback...so maybe check the sensors is the next step...camshaft/crankshat position sensor???

good luck

Some of the OBD test sets can be hooked
up to a laptop(or PDA) and moniter the
various parameters(including fuel pressure)
while you are driving.

Helps solve intermittant problems.
