2000 4x4 key recognition problem

This morning I tried to start up my 4runner, and after I stuck the key in the ignition, it would not turn at all. I tried jiggling the steering wheel to maybe unlock...something, but the key would still not budge even a little bit. I'm thinking it's the starter column not recognizing the key, like the chip or whatever does it has shorted out or is malfunctioning. The key wasn't like soaking in water overnight or anything, nor was it crushed or other such trauma. Has this ever happened to anyone, and what was required to fix it? As it is, I can't even put the thing in neutral to get it out of the parking spot. Any help would be appreciated, even if I am a newbie to the forum.

Doesn't sound like an electrical problem, but more mechanical. The chip shouldn't play a factor as you should still be able to turn the key, but the truck won't start if the chip is FUBAR. Do you have another key to try to start it with?

I've had it where I turned the steering while I turned the key and that helped...

Also we're all here to help where you're a new guy here or not.

I tried turning the steering wheel when I started, yes, until it locked in place like it was supposed to, but that still didn't help the key move at all. I don't have a spare key to try, as that certainly would've been the first thing I tried and would've helped diagnose the problem.

Just seems like a really bizarre problem, and certainly one I've never encountered before. I just don't understand that if the actual tumblers in the ignition have suddenly gone bad, or the key itself has become deformed in one night sitting on my nightstand.

Thanks for some advice; trying to learn all I can about what may be the problem, as I'm at work all day (my partner at work had to swing by and pick me up) and can't have someone come out and look at it.
