Navigation DVDS

Finally some information on what DVCD fits What generation of 4 runnerToyota Navigation DVD Identification Guide
There are two kinds of Toyota/Lexus Navigation DVD's available and they are not compatible with each other. There is the Original Equiptment DVD, which is installed in your Toyota/Lexus vehicle when it is built at the factory, and an Upgrade DVD which is used to upgrade your navigation system to a newer version. These two types are not compatible. The easiest way to tell the difference in these DVDs is to look at the front of them. There is a block of nine colored dots.....Original equipment DVD's have this block at the bottom, Upgrade DVD's have this block on the Right side. (see illustrations below)

Original Equipment Type Upgrade Type
Nine colored dots at the bottom Nine colored dots on the right side

The Original Equipment DVD's only work in Navigation systems that use the Version number printed on the front of them (ex. Version 3.1 or 4.0). The Upgrade DVD's will upgrade the software in your navigation system to the Version number listed, and then give you the newest maps, all on one DVD. Once upgraded to a new version, then the Original Equipment DVD's will then work. The newest versions available from Toyota (version 4.0 and 4.1) contain the newest maps from 2004, plus guides, park locations, and additional features. Version 2 and 3 contain maps that were created in 2001, and they lack many of the features on Version 4.

Notes
2004 model information: All 2004 Model Toyota Vehicles with factory installed navigation systems use Version 4 software and Version 4 discs. There is currently no update to Version 4.
2003 model information: All 2003 Model Toyota Vehicles with factory installed navigation systems use Version 3 software, but may have different Version discs. Most 2003 vehicles use Version 3 discs, but a few models produced early in the year have Version 2. The version 4 update will work for all 2003 Toyota Vehicles, except Matrix.
2002 model information: All 2002 Model Toyota Vehicles with factory installed navigation systems use Version 2 software and Version 2 discs. The version 4 update will work for all 2002 Toyota Vehicles.
2001 model information: All 2001 Model Toyota Vehicles with factory installed navigation systems use Version 2 software and Version 2 discs. The version 4 update will work for all 2001 Toyota Vehicles.

I purchased a DVD, why won't it work?
Many people on eBay are selling Original Equpment DVD's and they are listing them as Upgrade DVD's. These two types are completely different and incompatible. If you purchased one listed as an upgrade DVD and it doesn't work, use my identification chart to verify what type it is. It is either the wrong type DVD or it is defective. The Original Equipment DVD's usually work fine (if your was stolen, or is missing), but they can't give you new map information or upgrade your system. The only way to get new map information is to buy an Upgrade DVD. s. I hope this helps you to find the right one on ebay.
