Just letting any future readers know that the posts above are right on point. Had this problem on my 2003 and now on my 2005. Kind of freaks you out the first time you make that hard right. I'm taking my 2005 in for regular maintance and to get the sulfer smell eliminated next week so I'll have them grease the steering then also.

Still convinced we're talking about the same thing?

I'm convinced I am hearing the same thing as you.
Did you find out what was causing it? Was it really the stops making the grinding noise? I'll lube em up tomorrow and see for myself....

I just can't picture it since the noise seems to be coming from something rotating.....

But hey if you thought the same thing and it fixed you up.... I will gladly stand corected.

I really couldn't picture the steering stops causing this noise either. It really is quite an awful and alarming sound. But I went down there with a rag and some lithium grease (took about 5 minutes) and lubed them up. Problem solved.

Also, if you read one of the older posts on this topic it appears to be a fairly old "problem," possibly dating back to 80's trucks.

I had a slight noise the other day, but I think I lubed one of the stops and not the other to see if I could reproduce it on left turns. So the right stop may be manifesting this problem now.

For the life of me I can't figure out why they wouldn't lube this as routine maintenence. Maybe they are supposed to...

Ok....Lubed the stops with some grease....

I then went around the neighbor hood till I came to a turn and made a very slow tight right. The grinding noise is still there.

Only does it on tight right right turns ( before full lock).

Sounds like rivits on a caliper but is not related to applying the brakes.

I have looked all over for any obvious marking on the wheels, tires, wheel wells, and frame and see nothing.

If you don't mind could you try this for me....

Go about 1-2 mph and turn it right untill it hits the stop and back it off some so you don't dead head your pump for too long.

I can hear the noise about 30 degrees before it hits the stop.
Very metalic......

Quiet as ever turning left .

Thanks for your input. I really appreaciate it.

Had the exact same problem. Took it to the dealer and as it turns out the bump stop was actually out of place. They repositioned it and put some grease on it. Fixed the problem right away. So... you may need to see if the bump stop is out of spec from where it should be.

Loud grinding noise when making a sharp right. Will try greasing the steering stops.

Not constant in my case, only if I turn does it happen once when I back up, or maybe hit a bump too hard. Zero leaks, some say its a Ball Joint, or the Steering; I don't want to take all my skids off just to find out that it was the skid-plates shifting.

Don't mean to bump an old thread, but just want to say that where ever the original posters are, I hope you're living a healthy life and still rockin' a 4Runner.
