vavle seals?

I was going to change the valve seals on my 97 4runner 3.4L ...My question is ...
do the heads have to come off? or just pull the cams and the valve spacers/ lifters out and the seal is on the top?

Any problems i might run into doing this in a afternoon
im changing them because the smoke when starting per my other post http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showth...=smoking+start

bump bump....NO one?
I looked all over the haynes manual, It does not have a section for removal of valve seals. they just change them when they remove the valves, whiich they take the head off first...Do you have to take the head off just to change the seals or can i change them from the top.

Really....no one knows?

are the valve seals right there under the lifters? or do you have to take the heads off to get them out from the bottom?
