Does your 03/04 4Runner brake pedal make any sound?

Greetings:

I am wondering if any of you notice a slight hiss sound (like air evacuating through a small hole or a wistling snake) when braking. If so, I guess this a factory default and nothing can be done to make it disappear. It doesn't bother me too much; however, I think it ruins the quietness (I don't listen to anything while I am driving. I just enjoy the interior soundproof cabin) of the SUV when everytime I pumping the brake pedal.

Advance thanks for your input.

Thanks for your link.

The description of sound is similar to what I hear. However, I only hear the hissing sound all the time whenever I push the brake pedal. The sounds is inside the cabin and not outside as Fireman77 describe. There isn't any sound if the pedal isn't fully release yet for instance release midway, 2/3 then immediately push back.

Hmm, you may have to bring your truck to the dealer to have it checked out. Make sure to go on the testdrive with the serviceman.

Good luck.

Unhappy hiss sound

I know exactly what you're talking about. Mine does the same thing. It's not all the time, usually when it's cold outside I think. I'm going to have them look at it, and my sunroof, when exams are over with. It reminds me of what my basketball pump makes when I use it. Hope you find a solution.

My '04 does the same thing.
If I press the brake fully, then release, I hear the brake pump like sound for about 1/3 or 1/4 of the way up.

I wouldn't have noticed the sound outright, but I remember this thread.
I'm not concerned by it as it's rare that I stand on the brake. Could hardly hear it anyway above all the street noise.

If you hear anything from the techs though, pass it along.

k, if I got any news I will post an update here. Still 2000 miles to go 'til first service. I think I am going to do the service at 1500 miles and switch to mobil1 synthetic.

I have a really loud squeaking sound coming from my brakes when I slow down. Especially at lower speeds. I've taken it back to the dealership 5 times to fix it. They've tried cleaning and even replacing my brakes and rotors (front and rear). Doesn't quite sound like the same noise you have though. I am looking into returning the truck with the lemon-law. It's been very frustrating.

If the loud squeaking is happening only when you press the brakes, it could only be the rotors, pads or both.

This makes me think your dealer did not replace anything if the same sound exists after each of the 5 visits. Maybe they just sprayed some anti-squeal on the there and charged up Toyota for a warranty repair.

Call the 1 800 toyota number and open a case file and go to a different dealer. You can also ask for mediation papers from them.

Honestly, it sounds like a simple brake pad fix that your dealer is blowing you off on. I could be wrong but if they can't figure out what is making a repeatable, loud sound when brakes are applied... you gotta wonder how much difficulty they are having with oil changes!

Based on your description, the sound seem to be from outside while the woosh / hiss sound come from inside the cabin though.

Please keep me update of your "lemon law" (how does it work, what is the condition to consider a lemon etc) just in case I ran into the same problem.

Advance thanks for your time and help.

Brake Noise

My 2003, V8, AWD also make a noise when braking. It sounds like a "doing" followed by a slight hissing noise. I took the Service Manager where I bought the truck for a ride, and he told me it is the ABS pump doing a self-check, which the computer requires it to do periodically. Mine too seems to do it more often when cold. He told me as long as the ABS light on the instrument panel is not coming on, this is normal operation.

Hi, Did anyone ever get this issue resolved? I usually have the music up but lately I haven't had the stereo on and it's so quiet that I hear the sound you're talking about every time I step on the brake pedal. It's right when I step on the pedal from gas to brake that I hear a slight hissing sound for just a second from the pedal as it is going down, kinda sounds like a bicycle pump, as someone on here put it.
It has to be pretty quiet in the cabin to hear though..
