Unhappy 1st gen transmission problems

So I first noticed the problem whenever I was reversing. There was some sort of clanking noise. Now whenever i shift into reverse I have to hold the stick in place. So is my transmission finally giving out or is there something else?

Thanks in advance for any help guys

If you have to hold the shifter in reverse to keep it from spitting it out, most likely a syncro problem, the teeth on the slider as well as the gear (rev) become worn and rounded. This is common from going reverse to 1st or vice versa in a rocking action (stuck in mud etc..). What year are we dealing with? Some were synchronized, some weren't. Some had brackets for the idler that bolted to mid plate that could have fallen out, or arm itself cracked. Been long time since rebuilding one. Is it same as supra??

My 1st gen had a similar problem, except it kept jumping out of 3rd. I "fixed" it by holding it there with my hand until I was ready for 4th.

Don't do what I did. One day it did stay in 3rd, but it was STUCK there. I couldn't get it to budge. Even bent the shifter trying to pull it out. I was able to limp it home, but if that happens to you in reverse it would be a whole different story.

Ended up slapping a used $100 tranny in there and it's gone strong the last 20k with no issues.

BTW The messed up one was a Marlin Crawler Tranny with only 15k miles. So, the old Junk Yard one has treated me better. Hahaha.

transmission install issues

hey guys,
Sorry to jump on an old thread but i don't have the minimum reply count yet and need to get my 4runner back on the road. So i bought the truck missing the transmission and am putting a junkyard trans into it. Everything bolted up fine, and the motor spun just fine when i checked it prior. I got the transmission in and went to put the flex plate bolts in, but i cant get it to turn anymore. Any ideas on what the issue is? i know it sat for a while and i did drain the old fluid before installing it so there is a chance the torque converter is dry, but would that be enough to stop it from spinning? I'm a fairly big guy and i couldn't get it to budge with a breaker bar.
