Ok. So no more elocker nonsense. How does one tighten the pinion nut?

Edit. It looks like I take rear shaft off and torque down the pinion nut. Was that all that you did?

Edit 2: I guess I needed to actually read all of your posts. That seams like more work than I am willing to commit too. Plus my wife promised to beat my ass if I made the garage smell like gear oil again, and by that I do not mean in a good way. Sounds like it is time to engage a third party.

ive heard some have luck with just retorqueing the pinion nut and having success. When the factory initially torques the nut they mark it and stake it. So you have to "unstake" the nut then retorque. They also mark the nuts position on the shaft with a paint marker. You can use this as an indicator of not tightening to far or not enough.

Theoretically you should be able to pull the nut, pull the flange, replace the pinion seal when needed then replace the flange and nut back to the flag mark and restake. You would use a torque wrench in this procedure and just keep the torque to like 90 foot pounds. I'm pretty certain the factory just lists the rotational torque spec required to turn the pinion shaft, not the actual torque to tighten the nut. double check me on that though. If they give a nut tighten torque spec start with that an see if it takes the whine away

I do have another question. This noise literally only happens between 55 and 60 mph. Any significant to this?

So in some ways sad to hear others are hearing the same issue I am experiencing. But glad this forum is here to collaborate. Bought my 2016 t4r with 16,000 miles on it. Didn't hear the whine sound till about 28,000. Toyota rep say they are going to under promise and over deliver by replacing the the rear diff. They seem to think this is a normal sound but are willing to replace it still. They are preparing me to be aware that this noise will likely return. They are telling me " it's a truck and not a car and these are sound you are going to have to expect from a truck" . Seems unusual to me at only 28,000. Do I need to drive this t4r like a little grandma? I was really excited about this truck,. Thinking bullit proof Toyota. Not sure what to expect next. Currently waiting for parts for the dealership to replace. It will be interesting to hear if the sound disappears. Massive recall?

Rear differential whine

Hi everyone. I recently had this same problem with a whining noise coming from the rear end of my 4th gen with an ARB air locker. Took her in to a 4x4 shop and they said the diff fluid was full of metal shavings. They ended up having to replace the pinion bearings because they were scored badly. The copper air line was also replaced because it had either been routed wrong or had moved and the pinion gear took chunks out of it. It was an expensive fix for sure! When I initially brought her home, the rear end was silent. Then about a week later, I began hearing a whining/whirring noise again. I can't imagine the noise is coming from the bearings since they were just changed. Not sure if it is adjusted incorrectly again or what. Just thought I'd pass this along. If anyone has input, great. Really don't want to keep having expensive diff problems!!!

Welcome to the forum! Hate that your first post was about dealing with a problem.

How long has the ARB been installed before the noise started (mileage) and what type of gear oil?

you mentioned they replaced the pinion bearings, what about the ARB carrier Bearings. Were they replaced as well? I assume they replaced the copper airline also? did they route it the same way that caused failure the first time?

My ARB airline was initially routed wrong as well, allowing the "Ring" gear to catch it and tear holes causing leaks. ("Pinion" gear shouldn't be anywhere near the copper line as it is located deeper in the third member away from the air line route) Fortunately I purchased from ECGS and their 5yr warranty provided a full rebuild. They replaced all the bearings and seals in the ARB carrier as well as the pinion bearings and seal.

I just want to say thank you Austin for helping me wrap my dumb ass brain around this noise that has been bugging the piss out of me for 5 months. Just pulled the driveshaft and turned the pinion nut about a half turn and it significantly altered the noise I’ve been hearing. Now there is no doubt in my mind my pinion bearings are bad. I suppose now it’s time to crack open this bad ***** and see what’s ailing her. Knowledge is cool and I appreciate you passing it on.

My rear pinion bearing is bad, but haven't gone to the dealer to get it repaired. I called an Indy show near me and was quoted $1300. Toyota quoted me the same. How much SHOULD this job cost? I know it's involved (practically taking the rear end out).
