I finnaly sent in the car and they replace the sensors to fix the problem. It seems that the riding is more solid than before the problem happened. Does that mean that it had the problem since day one?

Mine likes to stay in the High position. But it does it intermittently... I can go a few weeks with no issues (it raises and lowers fine). Then sometimes the truck will put itself into the High position (although the dash light shows Neutral). A temporary fix for it seems to be putting the truck into high position, then back into neutral. I'll have to find the time to get it into the dealership and see what's going on.

I just got back from the dealer and it looks like I need a new ECU for the height control. They want $500 for the part and $150 for labor. I'm not very impressed, since it only has 74000KM (46000 mi.), is off bumper to bumper warranty, and I've only owned the vehicle 10 months. The dealer says it's not uncommon to see them (and the Lexus GX's) coming in for height control problems . I'm calling Toyota Canada and complaining, we'll see what happens.

I have just recently had a problem. Sometimes the suspension goes up (after I take off my trailer) and it doesnt come down for a while. I dont mind that its up, its just that the ride is really rough when in the SUPER up position. It looks like it has a 3inch lift on just the back.

Toyota Canada is doing nothing for me but the service manager at the dealership offered to kick in 20% so... They're going to retest the height sensors before replacing the ECU, since the sensors are usually the problem - there's a TSB or tech tip related to it. Usually Runners come in jacked up or low riding, they do a sensor and it's fixed, but mine seems to be riding level so its probably the ECU, we'll see

Any updates? Mine is now in the super up position and I dont want to pay 100s of dollars to fix something that seems faulty.

Although this rear air suspension option seems like a good idea from an automotive engineering point of view, my real world experience has been less than satisfactory.
My real world is Canada ... northern Ontario to be specific ... where snow/ice covered roads in the winter months are covered with road salt. This salt corrodes our vehicles' frames, body panels and other exposed parts.
In my case, the exposed part was a sensor for this air suspension system. The salt got to it and corroded it, causing the air suspension to fail. The failure resulted in the rear end being jacked up to the limit (like a hot rod at a drag strip!). Every little bump in the road shock my whole body while driving.
And of course repair/replacement of this system and/or its associated parts is expensive.
I have not replaced the corroded sensor, and have had the electrics of the air suspension "re-wired" so that it can still function to give me the suspension that I need.
Neat idea ... but poor reliability/dependability in my driving world.

How did you re-wire the electrics? Any help is appreciated.

Well, I personally did not do the electrical modification, my trusted mechanic at my local Toyota dealership did it.
I no longer have true "height" control using the factory controls in the centre console.
All I can do is air up the air suspension if it is getting low. I no longer have control of releasing air from the system. So I can not lower the air suspension using the inside controls.
If I really need to dump air out, I would have to do it manually by bringing it back to my mechanic.
The big issue for me was having air in the system to prevent me from riding on the rear axle.

Similar Issue
Hey Guys,
I have a similar issue as to what a few others have posted. Last month while I was having some work done on my exhaust, they hit one of the air lines with the torch and melted a hole in it. When I left the shop the car was bouncing everywhere. I brought it back in and they noticed the hole so they replaced the line. When I left the shop again it seemed the way it should be. But a few people have asked why the ride is so rough since the incident. After they said that I definitely started to notice it.
I can both raise and lower the rear with the switch, but when I start to drive around the Neutral light starts to flash and eventually goes into Neutral. Does this mean there is a problem? Or should I be able to drive around with the car raised and lowered? Something is telling me there is a problem and is the reason why it rides so rough now.
Thanks

It is normal operation. Once the truck reaches a certain speed (around 20 mph), it is supposed to automatically return to the neutral position. The bumpy ride could be a sign of a ride height sensor breaking. This occurred on my truck after my dealer lifted it without turning the ride height off. The truck is supposed to adjust the rear height according to weight. Lifting without turning the system off is bad!

This link might help ya. Some folks talk about some setting that the vehicle won't drive in.
Rear Air Suspension on or off?
Hope this helps!

Hi Guys, I am having a similar issue. Sometimes during driving the 4runner would lower down a bit and then the pump comes on and pumps it up again (all this happens on the driver side only). Then sometimes when I turn off the truck all the sudden the driver side just drops down and I can hear the air releasing.
I will exchange the air bag on the driver side, but now I think it might be the dump valve or an electrical issue. Anybody has a electrical/pneumatic sketch?
Has someone else had the same issue?
