Unhappy Knocking from engine on startup....

Well, my 4Runner went in today and not sure how long it will be gone. It's developed a rather annoying and bad knock when started in the morning. Hopefully they'll let me know tomorrow what's wrong and hopefully it's nothing major. It's a year old with 17k miles so at least it's under warranty.

What kind of knock? Is it a rapid succession of taps that goes away once the engine is fully running?

It's very strange. It doesn't knock when in park but as soon as you put it in D or R, it starts to knock and speeds up as you give it some gas. It will eventually go away once the engine warms up but it's still strange that it only does it when the transmission is engaged.

I hope you don't have this kind of trouble. I think this guy eventually had Toyota buy back his rig under the Lemon Law.

Do you have a V6?

It's a similar noise, very much like a valve but it only does it when D or R are engaged. I have a V8 and unfortunately the dealer just called and of course they couldn't replicate the noise. Looks like I'll have to keep at them or have it break completely.

Well, I remember reading about very few Toyota 4.7L V8s that develop "piston slap". Here is a thread I found using a Google search. I remember reading a few posts about it on the "Bob is the Oil Guy" forum as well. In addition, a post in this link makes reference to people who have raised this issue on the "Tundra Solutions" website too. Hope this helps....

It seesm there are a few of us, between the various boards that have this in cold weather. I found this thread here.

Unfortunately, it seems too common a problem for V8 owners. From what I understand, Toyota will not do anything about this knock. They claim that it won't do anything to the performance or longevity of the engine.
