Alarm going haywire after battery died
Hi! I'm new to the site and desperate for help; I literally joined because I need help so badly. I'm in college and really don't have the money to take my car to an overpriced mechanic and I feel like the problem may be an easy fix. However, no one has been able to help me so far. I know absolutely nothing about cars so please speak slowly for me haha.
I have a 2001 4runner. A few nights ago my engine wouldn't start; it was just clicking and the lights were all flashing. I assumed that the battery was dead so got out of my car and locked it. When I locked it, the alarm started going off. I unlocked it with the key and it stopped.
Today, my roommate helped me jump the car. I started to drive it around, and the unlock sound (four short horn honks) kept going off as I drove. So I parked it and turned it off. When I turned it off, again, the alarm went off again.
I've tried resetting it by turning the key to the "on" position, pressing the flashing red button to the left of the steering wheel, turning it off, and on again, but that didn't work. I've obviously locked and unlocked it several times and that hasn't worked.
I thought maybe it had something to do with jumping the battery, but the alarm system was acting weirdly even before I jumped the battery. I'm desperate; I need my car and I don't want to drive it to all the way to a dealership in Houston while the horn is honking over and over again and I really can't pay a mechanic. I'll even disable the alarm system if I can I don't care I just need my car.
