Question Tranny slipping

Has anyone else had transmission problems with their 4-runner? I have a '93 automatic, 6 cyl, 2-WD with only 130,000 miles. I replaced the transmission just over a year ago because it was slipping in drive and I was having to down shift into L to get moving from a complete stop. The new rebuilt tranny worked great for a few months...okay almost a year. So I took it in again and was told I needed a new transmission once again. Well that was just 3 weeks ago, and it's even worse...now it's lagging on upshifting into 2nd and 3rd as well as slipping in first from a dead stop. I'm about ready to pull my hair out. And I don't want to have to get rid of a car that has otherwise been good to me (except for the headgasket). Anyone have any ideas of what else to have checked. COuld it be something simple that wouldn't of been taken care of with the transmission being replaced? Like a sticking valve or the solinoid?

Thanks for any thoughts!

Chris

First thing's first; check your fluid level. If it's too low, you may have symptoms like this. How many miles has it been since you had it rebuilt? Sounds like a faulty rebuild if you ask me. Did you not get a warranty from the shop that did the work?

The fluids were fine. I had only put 80 miles on the new tranny before it started slipping. Found out it was the throttle body. After having that replaced it's now working good. Hopefully it will run good for a cross country drive this week.

I didnt see this thread before postin mine but i am having the same problem. Mines is the same model as yours except mine is 4WD. I took it to the transmission shop this morning to let the guy look at it and tell me if it is the transmission. But from what you have said on here your suggesting that i should get the throttle body checked before getting a new transmission? Also that must suck findin out that it wasnt your transmission. It had to be very expensive for you. Could you give me a little more information on the throttle body????

I'm sorry that you'r also having a problem w/ ur tranny. I'm not sure that I can be of much help in decribing what the throttle body does. From what I've been told by my dad and my uncle it's part of the air intake/fuel injection system, and has something to do with telling the car to open and close the cylinders. And if it's not operating properly then the car doesn't know that you want the cylinders open, so basically it acts like it has no power and slips. I'm not sure if I am explaining it correctly. Maybe someone with more experience on the board can explain it. I know many parts of the 2WD is built the same as the 4WD version. (probably to save $ at the factory)

Good Luck W/ ur car.

Did yours start off doing it every now and then, and then it eventually got worse? Because thats what mine did. At first it started only doin it once and a while and now it does it all the time.

yeah, that's how mine started acting up. I basically had to down shift to get it going from a stop inlow L first and then into 2.

Yeah thats what i had to do was to shift it down to L and then in to 2 and then into drive. But i took it to the transmission shop and the guy is suppose to take a good look at it tomorrow and i told my dad to tell him to check the throttle body. Im glad i saw this post before gettin a new transmission. I pray that its the throttle body and not the transmission.thanks
