A "HOT" rattle by sunglass holder/dome light, please help!

I have narrowed my rattle that comes from the headliner by the maplight/sunglass holder area to when it is hot outside. It is weird, the rattle only occures on hot / sunny days when it is parked outside.

I have a black 03 sr5 - has anybody else experienced this rattle when your roof gets hot? I have eliminated the map light/sunglass holder as a source - I had it out for a week until I replaced the holder with a new one, felt up in there while it was out, nothing is lose - this is driving me crazy. During winter months, no problem, but sure enough, when spring/summer rolls around when it is hot out, that d*** rattle comes back.

I can't imagine I am the only one with this issue, as it is obvious it only occurs during hot weather or when it maybe in the sun. It rattles with the AC on or off. I have held the headliner, pressed it in various places, and still can't find the source.

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

I get the same thing

I get the same thing in my '04 sport edition. Mine is not so much of a rattle as it sounds like a and plastic rubbing on the roof. If I push on my ceiling near my sunglass holder, it goes away. And yes, I only hear it when it's hot here in Texas. I don't hear it during the winter.

I actually had this in my 2000 4runner too and had them check it it out. They pulled the roof and reinsulated it but it was still there. I haven't had the dealer check out my 04runner yet because it is not as bad and I listen to music really loud anyways.

If anyone knows of anything, I would appreciate it too.

I have an 03 SE and experienced just such a rattle two days ago. My first one in the Runner and it didn't return yesterday or today. It had been a hot day.

I have a similar sound in my Mini Cooper S sometimes and my research yielded that it is actually the layers/glues from the roof and down rubbing.

Might be the same with the Runner.

And I thought mine was the only one with this annoying noise. I can get it to quit for a little while by pushing on the ceiling by the sunglass holder, but then it's right back. After reading about only happening on hot days, I think that is exactly what mine is doing. One day I'm going to tear into it and make sure nothing up there can rattle ever again. To me there is nothing more annoying than squeaks and rattles while I'm driving.
