Unhappy 96 4Runner SR5 white smoke coming from exhaust, black soot/liquid coming out, stalls

Hello,

I recently bought a 4Runner and changed out valve covers and fuel injectors. Now when I start it up, it starts up fine, then chugs along and starts to spew some white smoke along with black soot mixed with water coming out of the tailpipe. It smells like fuel, almost. The engine will also stall out. Seems to do ok if I rev it but I haven't taken it for a drive yet. Was wondering if anyone can help me troubleshoot or give me some direction. Thank you so much. Heres hoping she runs soon, because this is getting annoying :-)

Update: I pulled left bank of spark plugs (cyl 1, 3, 5) and they are black with cyl 5 visibly having fuel on it. They all smell like fuel. Also, these are brand new injectors. Intake smells like fuel as well.

Saw your post and feel your frustrations, but this is another a 4runner specific issue, it's combustion engine 101

Start with the basics, compression test, vacuum leave check, pcv valve check, etc, and work up from there.

Any codes being thrown?

No codes yet. Engine will go from 1k+rpm at ignition and starting, then after a few seconds slowly crawl to 500. Then after running there for a bit, she dies.

I had a friend telling me I screwed up the vacuum lines, but I’ll be going in and checking today. Then I will check the o-rings on the (cheap) eBay fuel injectors. My guess is one of em may be stuck open. Then, I’ll do a fuel pressure check.

Also - I did replace the Pcv valve. However, where it hooks up to on the TB still seems super grimy. Would that be an issue that would cause this? Lol.

Did you check the IAC valve that is attached to the bottom of the throttle body? If you cleaned the throttle body but didn't pull this off and clean it separately, you might be plugged up.

You can also check that the gate on the valve is working once you have it off by getting some wires and providing it 12V from the battery. IF you are sure what I am talking about, use the alternative google search with IAC valve and you'll find plenty of threads.

I did take the IAC valve off and even replaced the gasket. I'll take it off again and see if maybe I'm an idiot or screwed something up.

For what it's worth I tried cleaning my IAC twice and ended up just replacing it with a $30 unit from eBay which is been going strong for over a year now. This solved all of my idle issues

i'll keep that in mind. I bought some cheap fuel injectors from eBay. Retested my old stock fuel injectors and the ohms are fine. I'm gonna send 'em to WitchHunter. I'll also look into a new IAC. Other one looks old.

For what it's worth your build thread was the first one I ever looked at on this site. This made me want to get a 4Runner. :P
