help with AC blowing warm air

Just purchased 1996 4rnr and the AC blows warm. Tried recharging with refrigerant and AC started blowing cold. Noted an intermittent buzzing sound after the recharge though by the drivers side(engine compartment). About a week later tried the AC again and its blowing warm air again. Checked the pressure on the refrigerant and its low again. I suspect a leak but not sure where - will try to check the relay also but does anyone have any clues?
Many thanks for any help! fyi: checked the hoses and no apparent leaks/no oily residue and note that a new radiator was recently installed.

you guys are wonderful!

i was having the same flashing a/c light.
tried the banging of the relay and replaced it. the flashing went away, and the light stayed on, but the a/c compressor was still switching on/off and blowing ambient air.
i switched the fr fog relay for the a/c relay and i now have COLD air.

also, i have not tried it yet, but i heard about a technical service bulletin that i found on toyota120.com for this relay. i may try to hit up the dealer for a new one and see how far i get ... i will repost when i try.

but for now, im a happy and COOL toyota driver!

this sounds like the problem I just started having. Did you ever find out what the problem was?

I have a 2009 4runner and the AC light started blinking and no cold air, would it be the relay in that year too??

I have also the same issue before so I bring the vehicle to car care center and fix the compressor. sometime it might be the switch issue.

Fortunately, most Toyota products still have a sight glass in the refrigerant line in front of the radiator.
See the attached for how to use the sight glass.
Mine doesn't change in appearance at all. Is mine low or do I need to take a look at the relay? And if so, what relay is it labeled as in the relay box?
Thanks!

I have an issue with my ac blowing hot air. Compressor (or clutch) making rattling noise. Light for ac is solid (not flashing). Could this rattling be due to low refrigerant? I will have to check sight glass when I get home.
Engine is quiet, but as soon as I turn on ac, there is a click then a constant rattle. Or would this likely be that compressor is bad? I will also try to swap out relay with fog lights in off chance that that is the problem.
Thanks.

HELP! after disconnecting battery, my AC & windows won't turn on!

So riddle me this... I disconnected my negative battery terminal to swap speakers. When I reconnected the battery, I lost all control to my A/C, windows, Parking brake light won't come on, Compass is stuck on "East", and some other controls are not working right.

However, the car starts fine and runs normal but not all the controls work now!

I have been reading up on this issue, and I have heard that disconnecting your battery can reset your ECU. Seems like a stupid thing since disconnecting a battery is a normal maintenance routine.

My car is not even a month old!! It has been a miserable 2 days driving to work in 90 degree weather. I almost passed out today while driving because it was that hot.

Has anyone ever heard of this problem, or found a fix for this? it may be a fuse/relay, but i really hope its nothing more serious.

blown fuse

Yea so turns out it was a blown micro-fuse. The dealer tried to blame it on the aftermarket interior LEDs that I installed, but thats a bunch of BS! They said next time they won't cover it under warranty .

Just one little fuse was linked to the AC, windows, and 12v inverter button... but luckily it was a simple fix. Next time something like that happens, i will just put the factory interior light bulbs back in.

Driver side warm and passenger side cold

Ok I am beyond confused....04 sport edition 4runner and my a/c is warm at times on the driver side but cold on the passenger side. I took it to the dealership and they said it would cost $70 to diagnose the problem which when I told the lady what was going on she seemed confident in what the problem was and rattled the info off like she had done it a thousand times. Then she tells me if its what she thinks it is (I cant remember what it was) its going to be over $750...... Why would it be cold through one side and warm through the other side?

I think she said it was like a door that shuts and the one for the driver side is shut and they have to pull the dash off and hook a computer up too it and tell it to open.....HELP!

I bought a new cabin filter since mine was very dirty and also bought a new A/C relay. Didn't get lucky after both were replaced. My next step is to take the runner into a friends shop because I noticed bubbles in the view area. Must mean I need some more water freon. Hopefully that fixes the issue.
