2004 V8 issues: Going into limp mode, ODB Code P2714, Stalling When Idle

I took an 1800 mile roadtrip over the last week, and had some issues come up that from the searching I have done, seem like they might be related, but I also have no real idea what I'm talking about.

First issue: After some moderately hard braking that lead to a kind of rough, jerky stop, my 4Runner went into limp mode. I checked the error codes, and get "Pending Fault: P2714". If I turn the truck off and back on, error code is gone, and limp mode is gone. I can reproduce this with stopping too abruptly.

I drove for about a week after that happened, making sure not to do anything but the most gentle, grandma-esque braking.

Then, yesterday, after driving for about 4 hours, I stopped, and when I started again, the starter sounded like it wasn't getting quite enough power, but the truck started, and I drove again for another 2. Try starting it again, and it doesn't quite turn over the first time. Second time it does, but when I start to slowly reverse, it stalls.

I was worried about the battery, so I unplugged the three devices I had plugged in. It started just fine about 10 minutes later. I drove to O'Reily, had them test the battery, starter, and alternator and they seemed fine.

Plugged devices back in, and it still seemed fine. Drove it today, again, seemed fine. Couple hours ago, I drove it again, and it stalled while idling at a stop light. Unplugged devices, can't get it to stall again.

Can't get it looked at until Tuesday, but I'd like to go in with as much info as I can to help them diagnose, so any suggestions of more things to check, or specific issues that this all points to? Also, I'm definitely worried about potential damage by driving it like this. I think I can minimize driving between now and then, but any thoughts related to that would be appreciated too.

code 2714 is for a fault in transmission pressure control solenoid.

Given the circumstances you articulate here, it could be either a bad solenoid or a vehicle speed sensor is faulty. Basically it sounds like the transmission controls are really confused about what gear to be in during a hard stop.

Either component is typically an easy repair.

The stalling issue is difficult to gauge based on what is posted. Is this a starting issue or a stalling issue? When you have difficulty starting is the engine grunting and struggling to turn over as in a bad battery or is it just continually turning over like lack of fuel?

From what is written I'd say it appears like an intermittent alternator or possibly a battery issue. It looks like the engine is losing electrical power and causing the stalling. And the battery is low enough on amps that it struggles to turn over. Then the alternator intermittently works enough to charge battery.

The Alternator has a control module in it to control how much juice goes to the battery. These can wear out and cause intermittent issues. Possibly in your case at idle speed the alternator intermittently doesn't give the system enough juice and your battery is worn down and can't keep up. I had this happen on a 95 mustang gt once.

Resurrecting an old thread as your symptoms seem similar to what I am experiencing. I am getting the same code. I was driving and everything was fine, then the truck died. Started it again and it ran for a little while and died. Pulled codes and got 2714 but no engine codes. Also got a pending code for Shift Solenoid A P0751. At this point I can only imagine the truck is going into limp mode but for some reason this is causing it to stall. Weirdly stalls in neutral as well as in gear. This is on an 08 V6 4x4 with 240k miles. I'm guessing I'm going to need to replace the transmission as I don't think just replacing solenoids has always worked for people who have gone that route. Anyone?
