Question Rattle/tapping noise '04 SR5

I've read the posts on the headliner rattles and downloaded the TSB's for the fix but it didn't really change the noise I've got in my 2004. I can't seem to find what is causing a rattle or tapping type noise that I can hear around the center of the dash. At least that's where it seems to be originating. The tapping is definately not engine noise or from the lifters on my V8 because I only get it when I hit a rough spot in the road. It'll tap for a second or two and then quit till I run over another bump in the road. I even borrowed a stethoscope from a nurse that I know and could hear metal tapping sounds in my windshield of all places. Does anyone have any ideas?

Couple of thoughts:

1. I had a rattle this weekend -- turns out the mirror screw was loose.

2. Also had a rattle form the mirror -- dealer put some foam inside the plastic cover on the base....problem solved.

3. Have had some noises from the windshield -- glass shop found that Toyota forgot to remove one of the clips used to hold the windshield while being installed at the factory.

Window clips

Where did they find the window clips in your 4Runner?

The dealer took the truck to a glass shop and they found them. I presume that they had to pull the trim off the windshield to find it. Never really asked about it in detail, I was so glad to get rid of the noise!

Noise

Thanks for letting me know about the window clips. I'll probably have to take the truck in to get the dealer to mess with it. I was hoping I could find a fix myself so I didn't have to do that.

I always figured that warranty stuff should be left to the dealer so they are responsible for getting it right. Of course, it helps to have a good working relationship with the service manager of the dealership so you get top-notch service.

By the way, leaving these clips in is apparently pretty common for an American brand of vehicle, but mine was one of the first Toyotas the glass shop had ever seen where they forgot the clip. Just shows that mistakes do happen on occasion.
